I thought ABS is stronger then PLA ? that's why I used it at first... just stuck with it since then



what is it / what does it do?

ABS is stronger but although a lot of it is marketing by adding Pro or Extra or Ultra etc in general it's supposed to be even stronger but more importantly it prints at lower temps has less odour etc.
ABS is prone to warping but anyone who has tried Steadytech ABS Pro loves it. Can't speak for other brands but like PLA if you find a Brand you like at a price you like you stick with it.

I've always printed in ABS.... read it was stronger when I first looked for filament when I bought my first printer years ago and stuck with it

had a few warping/splitting problems but sorted all of those now (enclosure for printer, and getting it good and warm before even start printing)

Yep the enclosures are key for Pure ABS and the amount of 12 volt beds that just can't cope unless it's enclosed are the main reason.
Ender 2 has a much smaller bed so copes. much better but draughts from no enclosures cause problems.

Out of interest what were the things you did to eliminate warping.

separate PSU for the bed to run higher voltage through it

I'd power the bed on and go do something else, come back later when it and the enclosure were nice and warmed up

kept the bed hotter during the print

bought a nice bed cover... I've forgotten the name of it, there's a magnetic pad that sticks to the glass, then the metal sheet goes ontop of that.... sticky back sheet sticks to the top of that (so you print to the topside of the sticky back stuff) - prints stick really well, that's why you need the thin metal sheet - so you can lift it off ans bend/flex it so the print comes off

I think waiting for the enclosure to heat up made the biggest difference

printing slower helps too - I was mostly printing multiple things at once so didn't really print any slower, just printed 5 of the same thing so each one essentially printed at 1/5 speed

it was more than I wanted to spend... but fixed all my parts not sticking problems.... I'm not sure how must it helped with warping, because now I think about it I changed a bunch of things all at the same time (leaving enclosure to heat up etc.)

I just bought that system for the opposite reason, my prints stick too hard

I have an Anycubic Chiron 400x400 printer, bought a larger than usual one especially for projects like this.

Half a dozen PLA T-nuts that can't break T-slots... For the rear of lathe bed, to mount a replacement oil tank.

And a "mould" for vacuum forming a new lens for an old "Silver Bullet" Trav-A-Dial, which works, was cheap, but missing the lens! Still printing so a CAD render (I'll tap for a hose tail if it comes out right) - offcut of 2mm polystyrene to hit with the heat gun and slurp at...

Out of interest what were the things you did to eliminate warping.

So glad I decided to enclose my printer a few days after I built it some 16 months ago .. I'd realised about he draughts cooling things & causing warping but didn't realise just how much things might be affected .

Hope to be printing in ABS again once I've set up the fume extraction in the cabinet /enclosure . Being an old doddery git I started getting a bit too wheezy due to the fumes when in the same room as a running printer .

Is it parametric so we can make it fit bigger dovetails??

@ukracer um yes but it might not be pretty, it was one of my 1st attempts and it has been tweaked several times cos the dovetails were a bit of a challenge

Nice one.

If the BXA holder was 2-sided it could be used to clock the face and the OD of parts. Also does the support need to extend so far from the block?

I have another one to clock the OD, saves swapping round the DTI







I extruded the support far enough so the clock face cleared the main body
