Help needed no knowledge

Diesel lube oil is the last thing you should use. It's high detergent and keeps contaminants in suspension. You need a basic monograde which will allow the muck to settle out. I use SAE30 compressor oil. It may indicate the correct oil on a plate fixed to the pump.

There are no plates on the pumps but I will stand corrected on my usage, next question I will only be doing this once so can you recommend a good source for the best and what quantity would I need for the 2 pumps, any ideas on the sight glasses. Many thanks Chris

Hello again everyone the ongoing saga of this beast continues I have today fitted a second new 4hp motor to work the second pump and thought everything was going well until the pump locked up happily I was nearby so it was switched off before any damage to the new motor was done and the pump turned freely enough by hand so I gave it another go run fine for 2-3 minutes then locked up again. It still turns easy enough by hand but it definitely has problems, so i gave airmark a ring and asked Leo if they do a service exchange pump the answer was no, throw it away and £208.00 plus VAT please for a replacement. I wish now I had never set eyes on this machine but I am in to deep to pull out, if I do not pay out for another pump I have wasted my money buying the second motor, alright I know I can run it on one but I don't really want to pay to have a new motor sitting there doing nothing while the warranty runs out so unless anyone can tell me where i can get the pump rebuilt cheaper than new I am in it up to my neck and sinking fast I really wish I had stayed struggling with my little one as the wife says . At what point does it lock?

Whilst running or when trying to restart after switching off?

Is it running in the correct direction?

As regards cost - just think how much you've saved by not having to go on a compressor trainung course !!

Hi again RTB (BESSY MATE) it locks up while running, yes it is running in the right direction, and just think how much I would have saved if I had not given in to temptation Chris

Hi again everyone suggestions wanted I suppose I have nothing to lose by stripping the pump that is locking up but has anyone any idea what could be causing it to do so and as Airmark say bin it and replace, parts are going to be a problem because it seems that they are not supplied if bin and replace is the rule of thumb Thanks Chris

Are you sure it's the pump and not the motor that's locking up?

When it locks are there any funny noises?

Is the belt tight enough?

The motor hums until it is switched off but I am sure if I switched it off and back on quickly it would restart I will try and have a play tomorrow but you now have me thinking motor, even though it is brand new and overpowered at 4hp I am thinking it might be worth putting it on the side which is running well and should tell me if it locks on that one then it is a motor fault, also I would have thought that the pump would be seized or knocking badly after locking up which it is not Thanks Chris

When you fitted the 3hp motor off the first one it ran up to pressure ok if I remember from a few posts back, but with the 4hp it stalls?. Is this happening when both units are running or just the one.

Might be worth checking the connections on the motor and switch - if it momentarily stops it will not restart due to being under load, instead it will stall.

This was happening with both motors running at the start the first motor and pump cut out when pressure was reached, the other continued running for a couple of minutes on its own then locked up obviously the pressure regulator switch will need adjustment and I am not at all sure that the regulator switch is any good but hopefully I will try swapping the motors round today and see what happens Chris

Chris, I'm sorry you are having so much grief with your new compressor Mate, but I am sure once you get it sorted it will all have been worthwhile - it really is a beast!

How are you getting on with your spec lift refurb? You should start another thread about that - with plenty of pictures!

Not wishing to rub salt in the wounds, but your old compressor is working a treat still! Call me if you need a hand with the new one...

I know you now have connected to the cooker feed, but how do you have them connected and with what size cable, Firstly before removing the motor, with your multimeter check that you have the full voltage at the motor terminals when running if you have a clamp on meter you could measure the draw as well and then do the same with just the one running as the 4hp one draws quite a bit more current than the 3hp one, I would expect the bigger one to play up if you have supply problems

yes I have had it free running but only for a few minutes as all seemed fine

The second motor was running on its own when it cut out as the other had reached pressure cut off for that one which is 120, I dont know what the cut off is for the other one but it locked at about 135 on the gauge thanks Chris

have you checked the belt tension is not to great and putting extra pressure on the bearings

When you change the motors over you can at least find out if its a problem with the pump or the electrical side, hopefully!. as it did run it when you tried before if I recall, I'm sure you must be enjoying this little challenge

Hello again everyone I bet there are a few out there saying a fool and his money are easily parted and I would have to agree with them, I ran it on the other motor and it did not cut out because I didn't let it, the pump got very hot and the rattles were getting louder so I stopped it before it locked up but that motor is now on the good pump and working fine anyway the upshot is how can I get out of this problem cheaper than £208.00 + Vodka & Tonic for a new pump, and to make matters worse one of the feet on my new motor broke off any suggestions on my warranty standing with this Thanks everyone a very unhappy Chris
