I have just purchased a Boxford Lathe

got the backgear lever moving after all that it was a grub screw!

any way the lathe will only power up and run for 2 seconds before switching itself off.
Does any one have any bright ideas to why?

Contactor not latching?
Micro switches chuck guard etc.
?...

The contacter latches for a few seconds

I did not know there were chuck guards

That said if it was micro switches it shouldn't start at all.

I presume this is a old capacitor

It does sound like a contactor not latching. Any interlocks should completely disable it so that it won't start.

I take it the cap is just to smooth the motor

Check what the overload connected to the contractor is set to.
A big capacitor can stop your heart and relieve you of your finger so be careful!

Some have two capacitors a start and running

Push the green "button" on the contactor in, does it start and run as normal or run for two secs and shutdown?
If it runs it is probably a loose connection on the cutout switches if fitted, stop switch or motor overload.
If it cuts out it is probably the motor / cap.

Just run it long enough to test and not so it lets the magic smoke out

It only runs for 2 seconds tops before it stops itself. I need to check the back gear lever there could be a micro switch under to bolt I loosened

the back gear micro-switch has the wasted cap screw going into it which lifts the switch and makes contact when it is screwed down

That may be why the lathe turns off after 2 seconds

Man you've got to fix that wiring on the start cap before it makes the whole chassis live. I can't believe that someone has been dumb enough to run it through the door hinge!.

Yes the wire is pretty bad insulation not the greatest. Where should the cap live
