i found a old imperial ring spanner to fit, not that I will need it now!

You will get a much better finish, if you support the free end with a revolving center

Yes keep the stick-out down as short as possible, certainly less than 6 diameters if you can. Same goes for tool stick-out from the holder - short as possible.

I was just practicing some cuts and measuring to.see how far out it is

You won't be able to do that with such thin stock, it will bend away from the tool making the end thicker than the bit close to the chuck.

and if it digs in the results wont be pleasant just centerdrill long protruding stock and use the tailstock center. solid centers are actualy more substantial than a revolving one providing the speed isn't to high and u keep it oiled but 99 percent a revolving one more convenient I wouldn't get hung up over it

That's ok for normal turning but the only solution for his alignment check is to turn some fatter stock - and aluminium would be better with a very sharp tool.

Hateful stuff lol.
Do not ever grab the stringy swarf with your fingers mate. Stop the lathe and Grab some pliers. Will rip your hand wide open.

It looks like you have the wrong insert. The tool must be square to the workpiece. The cutting tip must be on the centre line of the workpiece. You can feed at a reasonable rate if everything is set correctly. Check that your gibs are adjusted correctly. Keep the tool lubricated.
