I have just purchased a Boxford Lathe

Depends what you mean by bigger stock. As long as enough of the jaw threads are engaging the scroll it shouldn't be an issue.

What happens with long stock that's not supported at the tailstock end is it walks.
Each rotation under pressure it will move a fraction out of each Jaw until it flys out.
Much like wiggling a shaft to ease it out.

Ok so the stock does not have to stick inside the chuck then that's ok

What is the best way-tool to finish the end with a chamfer. Then I need to either drill and bore or just drill then tap or cut the thread

Have you got any centres for your tailstock. Both fixed and rotating are useful.

With stock that will fit down the spindle I leave an inch poking out. Center drill it then extend it to desired length and use the center hole to support the ts end.

Stock that's too big I need to fully turn I've been known to punch and drill in a vice before clamping on the lathe.

I do have a center or 2 but I have a rotating one on order along with a half dead centre some centre drills a few chucks and keys how do u find the center to drill in the vice

Assume you rotated the tool post and used it parallel to the work.

Same picture 6 from the end.
Perpendicular to the work. I'd face off with that. Then turn right to left to size. Then keeping the toolpost in the same orientation I'd stick 5 from the left in and cut the chamfer.

Dunno if that's correct but it works for me and saves turning tool posts.

Cheers. I moved the belt on the pulley to slow my chuck down a bit too that helped.

Really need to invest in a better tool post.
That one nearly cost me my hand.
Original handle was cast. Had the tool parallel to the work for boring and as I hit the lever to tighten it up it snapped and took my hand In to a spinning 6" 4jaw.
So close. Lesson learnt.
