Yep, zero the dial after each cut, wind out a full turn then advance to zero plus the cut, always approach the measurement in the same direction so you always take up the backlash also in the same direction, no probs

I've found that the spring/flex in the lathe means if I don't back out the tool marks the work when winding the carriage back, hence I back the tool out at the end of the cut...
Not such a problem since I got the Holbrook as it's, er... Sturdy and has a quick-retract on the cross-slide that repeats to a few ten-thousandth, but previous floppy and chinesium lathes got me into the habit!

Why is that so it takes up the same amount of play next cut.

I cleaned up the screw cutting gear box got it all moving freely this evening too half a gal of brake cleanner a litre of wd40 and about half a litre of machine oil. Found 2 oilers under the side gear cover too

if you take a cut along and go back to the beginning for a second cut just stop the lathe move the tool back to the beginning measure the job dial in the cut and off you go no need to back off as its still set forward

You can back off the dial if you want - you have to do it whilst threading anyway and it doesn't cause problems. What you shouldn't do (if you're following my post above) is back off the dial, then put it back to where it was and take another cut at the same setting. That's called a spring cut and will put you back to square one. All you have to do is remember the dial number you were at and go back to it then add your next cut.

Forget about backlash. don't even think about it unless you're using a taper attachment or something. If you're reducing a diameter you'll always be winding forward and backlash will always be taken up. If you wind out then in again, backlash is taken up. If you're threading, turning, facing or boring, backlash is always taken up after the first pass. All you gotta do is remember the dial number and always approach it from the same direction. People worry about it until they realise it's not that much of a problem. If you want to wind on 10 thou but wind 15 by mistake, wind back until you feel resistance then forward again to the number you were at before then add your 10. You will very soon get used to making a mental note of the dial reading every time before you move it, until you do it without thinking.

BTW I never re-set the dial to zero for each cut because 1. I have a figure in my head already of where abouts I should be when I'm at finished size and 2. it's very easy to move the screw whilst doing it.

A spring cut has many valid reasons to be done, but if you take one before going for a finished size as detailed above, your next pass will probably over-shoot

Penny's just dropped. Postman carded me yesterday. Was baffled as I haven't ordered anything. Just remembered the sprayer you posted off. Il collect it Saturday
