Well, it's still silly season, work is ridiculous, in a fortnight it's all over though.

Small advances...

Went to see a man this morning to hopefully bend the tight radius corners, this is all 5mm thick.

Turns out he can't.

But he did have an ancient beautiful sheet metal roller.

He bent the 20mm x 5mm bits which will go on the flat plate, very nicely.

Leading to thèse bits.

So I continued my quest and now have one of these, a press brake. ( I think... ).

I've not used it yet, my brother and I can't lift it, even disasembled, was a nightmare to move and load by hand, and I'm unloading and assembling it at work tomorrow, with the tractor or engine hoist, as it is stupidly heavy, really stupidly heavy.

Made it in about half a day. That's 30x6, bases for stools. The bit of ally under it, held by the F clamp, is an angle guide. If you want any info about it, just ask. It bends much tougher stuff. Based on the one sold by Machine Mart, but heavier flat bar. Pins are 16mm and the radius is varied by sleeves on the hinge pin.

Here it is bending 25mm SS tube on a home made former. (For a solar arch on a mates boat.
Quite versatile ;o)

Like I said, looked at the ones available and ran it up in slightly heavier bar. Didn't 'draw it' just went ahead and made it. I am slightly dislexic, but apparently that is something to do with my ability to 'see' stuff and make it without bothering to draw it. I did do Tech and Mech drawing to A level, way back. I only draw things for clients to see what I am thinking about. Seems to work.

The bar is 50x10mm and the pins 16mm 8:8 ht bolts. Spacing of holes 35mm but I just chose that on a whim.
The spacing allows 40 mm bar to be bent and I have done some 40x8mm and a bit of 40x10mm IIRR. The radius is varied by sleeves on the pivot pin, right up to the bits of ally that I bend tube with.
The rusty inclined bit of T section between the fixed bits of bar is pivoted on the left pin and the sturrup in the 2nd pic adjusts it to close the work up to the hinge pin, depending on the radius required. The tube socket on the right, in the turning section, takes a decent length of tube. About 1.4mt for tube bending! Bit less for flat.
The bit of tube welded to the lower fixed section fits into a tool post bolted to the floor and the bit of flat locates to stop the bender turning.
The big tube that the fixed section is welded to was some idea, now forgotten.. Prob a bit of 60mm tube between the fixed bits would do as well.
As in most kit, the 'tooling' matters, so, like the tube bending formers, it depends on what you want to do with it. But the basic tool is well worth a bit of effort. Like I said, ran it up in a morning when I needed it. Cost? prob €30; most of the stuff was in the scrap bin. Local tractor shop has good stock of decent bolts at low prices.
Obviously the tube tooling cost some time on the lathe. But, as we all know, time on the lathe is not taken off your life span ;o)
The ally blanks were in the scrap box at my supplier, so peanuts.

Thanks mate.

I hassled the motor racing neighbours, they only have dies for tube.

Ended up getting sent to local retired blacksmith / forgeron. Who retired 15 years ago.

He couldn't help.

The folder I got yesterday is good for two mm.

Time to make something.....

Mat, for those curves in 5mm, a couple of big pins (20mm dia) with a gap between them of, say, 10mm would produce the result. little tweeks making a fair curve. Quick too.

I'm not ignoring your ideas, just don't have the time to fabricate tools, notching and sticking it in the folder, and loads of screw down clamps is doing a fine job.

Certainly for next time. Client breathing down neck....

I'm fairly confident once I've ground back all the tack welds, and a liberal smothering in fine body filler, some sanding and paint it'll look super.
