Yes they are hypnotic aren't they! Even two years on I'll sit mesmerised watching the Anycubic here do it's thing. The noise annoys me a bit now though. Hopefully some fans as Christmas pressies should sort that.

Part of it I think is I'm not "arty". The other side is I lack patience.
Weird as I can CAD up a metal bracket in 3D double quick and sketch in 3D out of my head. Try drawing a horse for instance and forget it.
Sat on the train here with a scrap of A4 and a Sharpie. Going to try and draw the pub photo...

I tried gimp I recall on a Linux install, struggled tbh. What's the method then to create a stencil in it?

desaturate/convert to grey scale.
Copy multiple layers.
Use the "threshold" tool on each layer to create different areas of colour.

me personally, I'd use them as photoresist masks and etch onto steel sheets with ferric choride, brick acid, or reverse electrolytic rust removal

I put the mono image into a Lithopane generator. Does that help at all? JPG to STL

We tried exactly this last night. Saved to greyscale in PaintShop Pro then stuck through https://imagetostl.com/ The resultant .stl was terribly "spiky" so much so that my lad reckoned it wouldn't print. Your blue one looks pretty good though.
So I take two of your greyscales above:

The result is this, looks like Bruce Willis should be trying to drill it and nuke it!
Clearly going wrong somewhere!

Use the first one: that looks like a normal b&w picture.
In imagetoSTL, change the dimensions of the STL to be around 1000x770, with an etching thickness of between 5-10mm - I also added a "base thickness" of 5mm.
This *should* get rid of the spikiness when it's scaled down in slicer - you only need a tiny amount of depth relative to the picture size to get the "impression": 1% of the largest side is probably enough: Google 'bas relief" images for an idea.
<Edit: I just noticed "enable smoothing". I'm away from my PC now, so can't try it, but that might provide a more "horse brass" look?

You can load the jpg directly into Cura and print it. You define the base size, height and some scale. 3D depth will be determined by the gray scale levels.
I've tried it to print some logos and used them as tool for metal embossing. Worked great. I believe some has used it to make lithopane lamps too.

You might have better luck converting it to greyscale first
edit: Took the posted image (which I expect is lower res than the original) and threw it into https://lithophanemaker.com/, tweaked a bit and it came out not too bad tbh
