Thats an adaptor to take it from the original smaller size to the more modern standard, knock the roll pin out and the adaptor should slide off.

A guy I do odd bits of work for is toying with getting a small tractor ( he's tried and destroyed a modern chinesium piece of ****e already)
I'm in process of persuading him to get an old Ferguson..then I can play with it

I'll try and dig out the photos later but a few years ago my dad's grey Fergie broke a selector in the gearbox, we pulled the cover off, repaired the selector and discovered an m16 x 100 size bolt lying in the bottom of the box, you could see where the gears had chewed it slightly so had been there for a while. Randomly my uncle had worked on the tractor when it was new and could remember having the gearbox out it and the bolt had been used to align something, there had been 2 of them working on it and both thought the other had removed it. Pretty amazing it did no damage as the modern ones have a meltdown if somethings not 100% perfect.

Forgive my ignorance (I grew up with David Browns) but is that a petrol engine?

One things for sure it won't have addblu, egr, scr, common rail or any of the other electronic wizardry that so bedraggles the modern tractor.

Good choice.

I've not driven a modern tractor. Last one I drove was a David Brown 1200, circa 1980. These grey fergies do seem to have a following though, although I've never seen one up close and personal.

Yes I did find that one thanks, also ordered a hard copy as I'm "old school" and prefer thumbing through a manual not using a tablet, laptop etc.

I did the same with a Yamaha FZR engine I rebuilt, I had a M6 locating dowel left over that I couldn't remember leaving out! I left the engine for over a year regularly looking at that dowel in a pot until I finally stripped the engine down again only to find none were missing!!! Cost me over £100 in gaskets

Used to get similar at work, someone would slip an extra nut, bolt etc. into the box of bits while you were working on something.

Other side of the coin was a guy I worked with would take 4 screws out of a cover and throw 2 of them over his shoulder with the phrase "just having 2 screws in will make it easier next time"

They've not changed that much from the grey Fergie, maybe 1 or 2 more buttons.

The grey Fergie was about 26hp originally, which is nothing, but you will be amazed at the work it can do, especially with the almost endless attachments you can get for it. Saws, post hole diggers, trench diggers (linkage mounted scoop), the Ferguson jack still works on modern small tractors, hook it up, lift the hydraulics and all four wheels off the ground! And that's before we even start on all the agricultural attachments, most famously the linkage mounted plough that kicked off all modern agricultural machinery. I remember demonstrating the then new MF240 in Sri Lanka, in about 1980, and a small farmer complaining that 30 years ago he had five acres and did everything with a 25hp Fergie and now he still had 5 acres but had to buy a 45hp tractor. The distributor (Brown and co.) Found the first one they ever sold and wanted to buy it back, but the owner wouldn't sell it as he was still using it in the docks at Colombo! Magnificent machines. Don't forget to switch it back from tvo to petrol for a few minutes when you stop it or starting it again will be "interesting".

Original Fergies were 20hp, which is why it was a TE20, and to give it's full model name, Tractor England 20.
IIRC the original Standard engine was actually just under 20hp (19.5hp sticks in my mind).

There were also TO20s, which were the export Fergies, fully named Tractor Overseas 20s, which usually had Continental engines as they were aimed at the American market.

There's still a TEE20 buried in the shed, which gets dragged out every few years.

Love it! I learned to drive on an MF 135
I was brought up on a farm, my dad had me out ploughing and turning hay as soon as I was big enough to jump on the clutch to change gear ….. Not that I needed much persuasion!

Old tractors are simplicity itself. And do most of whats required. But sticking a loader in one and with out power steering they become hard work. I had a case not quite as old. But our soft ground in places highlighted its limitations quickly.
Now have a 60 hp Kubota, that will last me till I need hole in the ground for my box!
