Evening guys .
Had a good sort out. Finally got my replacement bearings and managed to have a good clean up and sort out. I now have room for more goodies I have aquired including another Colchester student lathe. A lathe I brought ages ago and need to go get plus some other stuff but not going to go in to details of them yet.View attachment 139663 View attachment 139664

That Richard is true. But am investing in to new tooling for the Mellor some I have brought recently. So should be good to go very shortly. I hope .

Evening guys.
Got new bearings fitted and sorted. Didn't use the metal covers I made as some dk don't bore the holes out. Will deal with that later. Took the headstock spindle out just to check everything is ok. All looks good to me.
All back together now and it's running. New bearings are nice and quiet. Need to get some big rubber feet to stand it on to level it up and stop the vibrations.

Today's task is to clean up the little dings and dents in slide. And try and make a different set of bolts to hold it down. The two bolts in the picture are what a previous owner has made and they are awful .they snag up every time you go to rotate the compound .

I been looking at my screw cutting plate on the Mellor . It indicates 40 teeth gear up to 100 teeth gear. But my change gears go up to 127 teeth .

That's probably a metric conversion gear Spencer. The Boxford imperial machine uses a 100/127 gear for this.

I have brought some more Mellor lathe gears. So should have a complete set .

Pete. These are all the gears I got. I am still missing five gears but have listed the missing ones.
I have. 30. 40. 45. 50. 55. 70. 75. 80. 85. 90. 95. 100. 105. 110. 115. 127.
Missing. 20. 25. 35. 38. 60.

I found the 20. 25.
Two 20s and a 32 in the tumblr.
One 20 on the spindle.
A 63 rear screw gear and a couple more I need to take cover off to count. Gears everywhere

All the 127 or in my case 63 (127 doesn’t fit my lathe) is allow your imperial lead screw to cut metric threads.
My lead screw is a 3mm pitch so to cut metric threads it’s easy with standard gear pitches but if I want to cut imperial threads I need the 63 tooth gear to do it with the 3mm pitch lead screw.

It’s not really.
All your doing is making the lead screw travel quicker so your tool cuts in a spiral.
The trick is getting the right gears in the right places to make that spiral the right size.
You’ve got all the info you need for the imperial tpi threads. If you want to cut metric threads you need to do some working out with your 63 or 127 gears.
Guys like Pete will have an idea of where to put the gears to create a metric chart.
