Evening guys.
My Mellor lathe is back in hospital again. This time for a new set of pulley shaft bearings as these ones are totally shot. A trip to polar bearings tomorrow and see if they can match them. These ones swivel to. Also my chuck backplate threads ain't all that. Looks like someone cut them with a hammer and chisel. I did sus out the spindle thread size. 1 1/4 9tpi whitworth fine. So a new backplate is in order. All good fun not.

The thread is a bit naff, but it's not that important. Your chuck location comes from the plain register on the spindle, and that looks to have a flat on it as though someone has given it a belt with a hammer, unless it's just some distortion introduced by the camera.

Yes I see what you mean. I will check that tomorrow. Camera shows up stuff I don't normally some times see

Nowt wrong with those threads, but as Hood said you need to get rid of that ding in the register. I would simply face it off with a lathe tool just as if it was a piece in the chuck. Stick a small bevel on the edge to reduce the risk of dinging it again.

Will pick my new bearings up next week.
On my old bearings someone had made a bearing cover. These are naffed so started making some new ones. The covers are a bit of an odd set up really as the bearings have to pivot slightly to allow belt alignment. But with a cover it can't move so not sure. But making new ones.

Spherical bearings have rubber seals which flex allowing the bearings to wobble. If the cover stops the bearings from doing as there supposed to I would not be putting them on.
If the cover is as you say shot because the bearings have been rubbing it then it’s not right.

It's how I look at it to Richard . I think that's what naffed them before. I started making the covers but after studying it I say the metal covers are not correct

There's no reason that I can see why they really need to be spherical bearings. Most old lathes use plummer blocks on the countershaft and they have no adjustment at all. I'd just use ordinary bearings with rubber seals.

If you want to use the metal covers, just cut a recess/rebate on the inner face, centre outwards, so that they're only contacting the outer race of the bearing when installed. Same style as the bottom of those openings in the cast arms.

Evening guys .
Had a good sort out. Finally got my replacement bearings and managed to have a good clean up and sort out. I now have room for more goodies I have aquired including another Colchester student lathe. A lathe I brought ages ago and need to go get plus some other stuff but not going to go in to details of them yet.
