Hiya, New to the site, first post! Found it as looking for ideas for my restoration. I,m working on a 1974 MGB GT, working on right side at min, got new footwell, three part sill set,boot floor,and floor pan in up to now.I just want to say big thank you for the citric acid idea works like a magic trick!! The rust just disappears .I'll have a few parts soaking all the time now! Cheers

Not too bad - re-skinned one of the doors recently - I will have to post a few pics
It went well but will take some time lining it up

Going to start putting it back together as a dry run prior to paint prep to make sure
everything fits together still.

I have to clean up the narrow axle ready for new springs
Plan to spend some winter time putting the rear axle back on so I can move the car around.

I bought an MG midget in the summer as a driver which has taken up some of my time

Just ran across your thread looking for some info....what an awesome project!
I am knee deep in my 72 MGB Roadster....just got to the point where I can start putting back new pieces of metal after creating a huge pile of rusty pieces (drivers side now - can't wait for the passenger side!).
You have answered my question in your pics (about what to do about the bottom of the door pillar)...
I also have a 71 MGBGT that is next up on the block for work (thank fully it has solid floors and rockers, etc., and needs more cosmetics and mechanicals - Rover 3.5 V8!)
Then it will be on to my 1980 Rover 3500 SD1 - hopefully before I get put into the ground - I am an old guy!

Took the car out of hibernation this week.
I spent the winter worrying that the passenger side sill was too high. So I fitted the hinges and door catch yesterday to decide once and for all if all was as it should be. it turns out everything is fine.
except the lower part off the front wing is flatter than it should be. this makes it look too long compared to the sill. the lowerhalf of the front wing is a repair panel that in a previous resto was shaped using filler.

if I can't form get the front wing back to the correct shape I might weld a new lower half on

If you get a new lower half be careful to make sure you get a genuine British Motor Heritage one and not a Steelcraft one. The BMH one fits much better and has the correct profile. The last one I used was Steelcraft whereas I had used BMH before. I have ended up doing a lot of fine tuning with the Steelcraft one.

I wonder if this was a steel craft panel on here.
It lacks the curve of the door and rear panel. there was a lot of filler on there which must have been used to shape it.
I'm going to try and roll it into shape. if that fails then I think your right about the heritage panel.

I think I have taken a good step forwards in recent weeks thanks to a fellow car builder who has sold me some of the parts I need from his doners cars. more importantly at a good price. the list includes two front wing's. front cross member, practically new rear springs, steering rack, fuel tank, rear shocks, brightwork, steering column

and a bonnet.

With renewed vigor front crossmember has been stripped and painted,
The chrome bumper rear axle aquired in the autumn stripped cleaned and painted. it was in great condition with all new brakes. just very dirty.

As many will testify when taking on these projects there are good times and bad times. There are also great times.
For me finding all these parts in one place has been a turning point. I don't have room for a donor car.
Next the plan is to assemble rear axle with springs and shocks.
Then fit it back on the car.
Then I will turn the car around and remove the engine and gearbox for paint and to give access to the engine bay.
with the car turned around I will finish welding the body shell.

Looking forward to some more welding. with my new found skills I have in the last few weeks replaced a sill and door post on a friends classic range rover and welded a fiat punto through its mot.

The midget is used everyday. It's great fun. scruffy but fun

The Gt6 is a car I plan to own one day. It's a boyhood favorite. I love the sculptured Gt Stance of the back of the mk1's.
