I was thinking of gluing it as well to make the crate properly monocoque

Using empty Plastic Soda Bottles also work well for packing some heavier items. If an odd shape is required, they can be pushed in to form around the object's empty space in a box, and then screw the caps on tight to keep the shape which prevents them from collapsing any further. The cost is nothing.
My clients sometimes couldn't figure out how to get to the contents of the box. Answer - Just break the foam with your hands! The foam, expanding, fills all the irregularities between the walls of the box and the complex shapes of the product. The price of one-component building PU foam in a can is low, less possible damage.
