Would you use something of the correct period so it looked right to operate a modern starter that's hidden out of the way?

Yes. My plan is to recondition the original motor. Have s period on/off switch mounted on the lathe. But behind the machine it would go in to a modern isolator

I may have some old switches in one of the sheds, Ile have a look tomorrow.

If all else fails, how about something like the ones you get on Meddings [etc] drills?

I forgot to show a picture of the 5 mounting holes. The one I am suspicious about is the single hole at the bottom of the picture.

Had a rake around and the best I can find is this nice General Electric DOL starter, looks virtually unused, knockouts still intact:

Shame your motor wasn’t a little bigger, I’m sure I have a big old cast iron manual star delta starter somewhere, would have been just the ticket.

I dont think I need a bigger motor lol. It's a tricky one this. As it will be wired up to a isolator. But the on/off switch that I will mount somewhere on the side facing headstock has got to kind of match the machine

This is the look I want. Ain't got a clue what it does but looks cool. Electrical devices are definitely not my favourite.

Indeed, I have lots of modern stuff, I was hoping I had some better old bits but it’s not looking good.

Been a busy day. Had enough of doing gears so I set about the task of sorting the apron out. Even though it was chemical cleaned. I cleaned it again inside and out. Done some file work on some sharp edges. Polished all the shaft holes. And primer inside....that was a mission.

Had a totally panic to day.
Looking at the gearbox and noticed there was a gear missing. A nice shiny shaft but no gear. The gear is an idler that drives the big gear on the lead screw...had a good look about upstairs.....no...definitely not here..started looking through the 300 pictures of the build...definitely did not remove said gear in the strip down...eventually found the pictures with all the gears....and bingo...there it is. What a result. The gear was obviously taken off at some point. So today said gear is now had the full treatment and sitting in primer...and I still have about 20 more gears to do. Joy.
