Could you double check that please. I just put in LJ1-3/4 and it is giving 3 3/4" OD with RLS14 as an alternative name.

I put in RLS10 as written on his photo and it seems to match better (LJ1-1/4).

Had a fantastic day today. Starting off sorting the headstock spindle bearings. Then the rest of the day set with the mammoth task of stripping down the headstock spindle. A tough day. All parts in brilliant condition. I shant post the 40 plus pictures but a lot of measurements were taken so everything will sit as was when I rebuild it

Today. Make a start cleaning the spindle. Full of rust inside....or was full. Nice and clean in there now..just got to polish inside...also sort out a few other issues that someone previously has done....

Fortunately it's large enough for you to walk down. Some nasty finishing from the drilling, you'll need to clean that up too

I cant get rid of the awful teeth Mark's left behind by some toss job. But have made a start taking the worst down a fraction. Just got to re drill the hole and a good polishing

I find that you can reduce the bad appearance of marks like these and general "piled up metal " marks by gently peening the metal back into place with a very small hammer, it will never be perfect, but it looks a lot less offensive. On my student, the knurled nut on the feed from the spindle to the SC gearbox has a shear pin behind it, the pin had been sheared, and some monkey had used stilsons on the knurled nut to get the drive working again. I got it off, and replaced the pin, but it took some doing, and much nervous sweat was lost.

You could turn a few thou off it, then turn up a ring and press it over the damaged area. Bit of a faff, but I know from your work that you are a bit of a perfectionist!

My Denbigh drill had a locking collar (since replaced) that would not budge for love nor money, heat, penetrating oil, shock impact, time... I tried them all. After the stillsons came the cold chisel and I cracked it off, had to machine down the spindle and re-make the collar, didn’t have a big enough drill bit so it was internally bored from 13mm to about 25! Took ages, but good fun.

I could turn it off. But I can probably get most of it out by hand. I will have another go tomorrow.

Got the spindle set up. Today I am going to draw file the nasty rough dings and scratches out.

Why not simply leave the dings in it until the machine is rebuilt then turn them off under it's own power? You can then face the register as well to removes any small bumps on the face.
