Thinking some more over dinner, i'm not even sure its worth doing an RTB on it - i'll have to pay shipping and repairs as out of warranty and i was only going to sell it on, but at a guess it has a value of what, maybe £200? That minus the repairs = pretty much nothing.

Hood makes a very valid point also pop the covers off(unplugged) and just look for anything obvious

I had it apart way back in this thread, cleaned it all out and found nothing obvious, it may be a diode gone but they usually fail instantly, this is sort of intermittent but getting worse. I'll ask them monday if there are any suggestions, they are pretty good on the phone.

Yes, they certainly do get a good reputation for their after sales service.
Although you had the covers off way back, things have gotten worse so maybe there would be signs now where previously there weren't? but phoning and maybe even sending a link to the video might get you a favourable solution.

Yep i'll do both, i expect to be splashing the cash in the morning on a new box as well

If they come up with something that pans out i might fix it and use for a hot-spare maybe if not then spares or repair on the favourite auction site

Doesn't have one - the only relays seem to be WF motor and gas solenoid, rest appears to be solid state.

It could well be a diode - there are two right before the output choke, one fails it would be half-wave DC which would be lumpy, only thing that makes me think its not that is the intermittent nature of it.

Having said that however they do seem to be good machines which are made in France.
I had been using one of their 160 amp stick welders when I was fitting out some boats and was impressed with it, so much so that when my own wee Chinese one eventually started to give issues I went and bought the 200 amp version. So far I can not fault it but it is early days as I have only had it a month at most.

They do look ok but something about the Esab just ticked my boxes really - i have no experience with either Lincoln, Miller, Esab or any other makes apart from Clarke/Sip and the R-Tech so i just went on dozens of videos, customer reviews and capabilities thats all.

Having the top-of-the-range (EWM et-al) would be great but i do mostly short quick welds so don't want to spend a while dialling it in (easy when you know what your'e doing) so the Esab with the sMig feature looks ideal, I just need to know that when it goes wrong its my fault not the machine's

Oh the EWM works great right out the box but tweaking it to make it do exactly as I wanted was easy.
I struggled my first few welds with it as I was not paying attention, probably due to never having owned anything quite like it before. I had the wrong parameters set, wire dia, wire type etc and it wasn't nice, after I got that changed it was a dream and was putting down as nice a weld as I had done before. But like everything else you always want more and the EWM is certainly capable of that, hot start, double pulse,crater fill etc etc and being able to tailor things to exactly how you want is a boon. Once set to what you want there is no need to change again although knowing me I will probably want to try a few new twiddles and tweaks just to see


Esab, had one for years, big traditional transformer Mig, 400 amp so not what you are looking at. Great machine and did all that was asked of it so I have no doubts about the Rebel being anything other than a great machine.
