I would like to get it spinning in the correct direction,
Some mains-powered electric drills ( e.g. Metabo, Skill ) reverse direction by rotating the brush assembly within the body of the drill, using two levers at the tail end of the drill body. The rotation is about 60 - 70 degrees. That is why I suggested trying this:
"assemble the motor end-piece that holds the brushes without the bolts, and try rotating it about the axis, away from the original position, testing as you go".

I thought by reversing the live and nutrual at the plug would change the direction, I keep wondering what the LR stands for on the motor (left rotation ?)

The collet chuck locks in the normal direction, it's frustrating cause it's such a lovley machine

If you consider just what it is that the two wires are doing it's easier to understand why it doesn't. It is fed a.c. - alternating current. The polarity is changing 50 times per second, yet it still runs only in the one direction. D.c. is a different kettle of fish. If you had a d.c. source then you could drive it from that and reverse it at will.

Brain going soft in old age, but don't you have to swap the coils mag field round, so changing the field winding end to end will do it e.g. brush connection to feed wire, feed wire to brush.

I've tried so many ways I've lost trackmaybe I need to start again,I looked at that link and it says about a capacitor motor, I not sure if my one is the same it's just power striaght into a winding, thanks for advice I will be like a dog with two danglers if I can get it spinning in the correct rotation

It might get a little stressed.Do you think that if a bridge rectifier

At one point I completely the outside winding from end to end and rewired it and it still spun anti clockwise
