Lowering Rear another 25mm/Straightened Wheel Arch
Hello all, here to inform you of the recent changes to the car since the last meeting. On the way home from the last meeting dad suggested i lower the back end slightly. I lowered the car in late January this year only 45mm though. So if i lower it a further 25, it will be a total of 65 mm.
I planned to be up bright and early this morning, because it is 26 degrees outside and i was off work. This didn't happen as my alarm didn't go off. I woke at 10 and had to go with my mum to get her car mot'd. It passed with flying colors. Though the inspectors didn't let me watch due to insurance and safety regulations i suspect. Came home at around 1pm got some lunch and set about work on the car.
I drove the car into the shed with the rear pointing out the door.
I left the garage door open as it would be a good chance to get some sun. It was warm enough to have the shirt off anyway. Lifted the rear up with the block and tackle, and set her down on a log. I took off the rear wheels and unbolted the shocks.
I measured the distance from the top of the shock mount bolt, down to the bump stop platform, which was, 205mm. Wheel i lowered the car before, i raised the trailing arm from a distance of 245mm to a solid 200mm, but the axle was off the car at that time and didn't have the forces of gravity acting upon it, so that figure was correct. I needed to shorted this distance of 205mm, to 180 mm.
I unbolted the anti-roll bar and twisted it to reveal the end of the drivers side torsion bar, and it wasn't long before i had it out. Thankfully i greased the torsion bar splines when setting the height before.
I raised the trailing arms 25mm and inserted the torsion bars again. Once done i bolted the anti-roll bar on again along with the shocks and wheels. Lowered her onto the ground to witness the result of my 3 hours work.
Before..
After..
The only reason we really dropped the back more is to help caster angles. On dad's advise.
After i took the car for a couple slow drives down the lane i parked her in the shed and bend the inner wheel arch straight again. It bent when the other car turned in on me on the way out of the bottom corner in the first heat on Friday night.
I just beat it with a block of wood and a hammer and got this.
So the car is set for Saturday the 13th at 2 pm. Can't wait, though i expect numbers to be low as two of our drivers have jumped ship to Ballymena Raceway. I intend to race there next year in a different 106,Which wil be An arched car with sill, Lightened and balanced flywheel plus a few other things. I also intend to race my current car at aghadowey and race the new car at ballymena and nutts corner if all goes to plan.
Before Saturday i need to get the inlet manifold off the car and cleaned to go back to the tig welder, because silly him, he didn't make the manifold water tight, Honest mistake, he lifted the stainless steel rod and left a deposit on the manifold which has caused a leak. So it will have to be repaired an fitted before Saturday. Tomorrow i'm going to another racers garage to help him change an engine in his 106 so he can get racing on Saturday, also this is the man i accidentally spun/ he turned in on me, so i hope to make amends.
All for now, I'm foe bed and for an early start tomorrow, if the alarm goes off.
Nothing needs done to the car other than the manifold being repair for Saturday.
All for now
Comments and complaints welcome
