There's something like that running around the back lanes near my place, no reg plates on it, it seems to be a farm vehicle, and it's not hanging around whenever I see it. I can't imagine it's legal on public roads.Polaris Ranger.

Nice little Allis Chalmers crawler I found in a shed miles from anywhere. Doesn’t look like it’s worked in a very long time 
There are loads of UTVs about. Most run on red diesel, so cheaper to run than Quads. We sell Kawasaki Mules, the big ones are nearly the size of a Jimny. For road use they need number plates. Most are on the agricultural exemption like tractors and Quads. Can't quite see Royal Mail's use for them. Something like a Jimny would be more practical for anywhere accessible by road, though the diesels would be cheaper to run. Don't know about Polaris, but the latest Mules are about as comfortable as a series Land Rover and heaters are an aftermarket extra.
Regarding the Austin truck, apparently pre-war Austins were popular around war time and just after, to convert into pick ups and agricultural vehicles. Why particularly Austins, I don't know, probably rugged construction and reliability.
