When we went it was on a rickety old ferry. I remember a restaurant called the donkey in trousers, and the name Ars-en-Ré as well as seeing women in traditional dress and salt flats if I'm not mistaken? It was a long time ago though!Very different now, nicknamed Paris-Plage...
Some friends built a house near a beach on the west side. Finally decided to sell it, but as non residents, the tax office caned them on various pretenses, think they are still fighting it... Cost them about €200K. Nice house, but anything on the island is expensive.
We liked a restaurant by the port in the delightfully named Ars-en-Ré, but it is quite a hike from here plus the length of the island and they put the bridge toll up in the summer... crowded too.
One thing that the friends showed us, not mentioned in the tourist stuff, are the Atlantic Wall defences still there in a pinewood. Loads of gun emplacements, a big fire control tower and a lot of underground accomodation and hospital stuff. Massive concrete structures, esp the tower.
