Replacing Rusty Bits

Been away for work this week but had today in the workshop. Rad closing panel de-rusted, fixed up and welded back into position.

Finished welding the NS bulkhead, it's all fully welded so a but OTT. Also bought the repair panels available for the rear, stripped some of the paint and filler off the NS rear arch, not sure why there was so much darn filler.

Amazon's have a wee issue of cracking where the chassis rail meets the inner wing, both sides of mine had wee cracks. The OS I did a while back so today I fixed the NS. I also welded the inner cover panel back in. Still need to decide if I box in the chassis rails and bulkhead to strengthen it. The issue is more welding directly on to the bulkhead, I've already fully welded a lot of this area.

Battery box next, taking it out to repair.

The battery box had a patch welded in one corner so I took it out, cut the corner out and welded in a new section, not perfect but the pressing is quite rough so is fine. Gave the box a spray with the Cromwell zinc paint, goes on fine and should be ok as a holding coat. Should start seeing more progress for a while. A good mate is up this weekend and we're spending Sunday at the workshop, he does really lovely work so the pressure is on. ;-)

Got brave and have made a start on the NS rear arch and bottom rear quarter. Steady progress, lots of cutting and drilling to get the old rusty stuff out. There were two arches welded over the original arch and not the best repairs done. It's a pretty big job with a lot of new parts and still need to see if the rear quarter might need extra repairs. Taking pics as I go along.

Was telling my wife that there were two arches welded over the top of the original arch, her reaction was, wow it should be really strong then.

Yea definitely a case of more is less! Great work...aligning the repair to the door gap must be quite tricky. Are you using spacers to get the gap right or just eyeballing it?

The front outer arch sits over a flanged section, originally it was further in a wee bit but checking with a door that I know is correct it matches lovely with the contour. The gap is also nice apart from the corner where the arch meets the rear quarter, but not done that bit yet. I was planning on leaving it until I matched the door up and saw it was too tight a curve so will correct that. The final door gaps will be done later and if anything is needed I'll mod the doors. It's however a 50 year old car, the door gaps will never be like a 2017 Honda.
