Replacing Rusty Bits

Yea I think the main think is that it looks "ok" to the eye when it's done. Personally I'm not a huge fan of those restorations where the car comes out better than it left the factory originally! It is quite hard to know when to stop tinkering and just accept that it's as good as it needs to be...I'm the worst for redoing stuff!

Ah more dodgy repairs around the rear corner and the rear lower panel. So more cutting out rusty bits. Last bit was to make a template for the flange curve on the inner arch as it's very important with regard to the out arch fitting properly with inner.

Made the small repair for the inner arch and started making the closing panel that fits behind the inner arch. I just need to finish it off a wee bit more and then I'll start on the rear quarter lower corner. I also won't weld in the repairs until the lower section is done due to ease of access.

@Burdekin Nice!! I have a profile gauge like that, quite a few of the needles fell out first time I used it.

Does SWMBO bring you food/drink when you're working evenings in the unit.

Walking over to the workshop after the Lion's game and dropped into Gibb tools to pick up a new grinder. Always had two but recently using my erbauer as a paint stripper with extraction hooked up. The Makitas are more compact so better for working on cars and a nice wee grinder as grinders go.

Also while I was in the tool shop noticed a wee 4ft adjustable spanner on the wall, ideal for those pesky tight bolts, you could just smash them off with that.

Just a wee bit of time at the workshop today, fitted up the closing panel and gave it a coat of gal spray. Has to have a flange bent over but will do that later when the outer arch is in position for reference.

Cut off what was left of the lower panel on the rear quarter, did some planning and pondering. Going to replace the bottom 30mm of the rear quarter, a section at the front and a section at the taillight. Made a former from the other side as a guide for the new lower section I need to make.

So tomorrow I will make the new lower section, whack the panel with my flipper and dolly for a bit and then tack it in position, going to be interesting as it's a big floppy panel.

Thought I'd get the rear quarter lower repair done but more time prepping and flipper on dolly work to get the panel back looking decent. Also I think the arch needs a bit of modifying where it meets the rear quarter at the bottom, think it's made for the sedan specifically but with a slight mid fits the estate, some googling to do tonight. Just need to trim the bottom of the quarter panel and then tig in the new repair, fingers crossed it goes well.

It all gets a bit scary when you have multiple panels cut out and there are big gaping holes.

I'm a happy camper, the repair turned out nice, just a wee bit of finishing to do there. Floor repair tacked into position and just working out the outer arch. All looks like it is fitting nicely (touch wood) so am well pleased.

Not had much time annoyingly lately but over tonight. Started tacking the outer arch in, got the front section blended in nice. Had to do the tacks left handed as I pushed from behind. The arch is for the sedan so the rear bottom is different so still got a bit to do to blend it in nicely. Made a repair patch, wheeled it to get the shape and then cut to shape. I will flare the arch out to match and so far looks like it will be good, better than what it was anyhow.
