Muckish quartz sand quarry in Donegal - about 2000 feet up on the Atlantic coast. I was staggered to learn that it supplied high purity sand to Pilkington in St. Helens for optical glass manufacture, especially during WW1 and WW2. The soft quartzite was quarried at ~2000' and the sand was washed down a long chute to a loading floor about 750' below!
Workers had to walk up & down every day.
Photo 1 is an engine for pumping water up to the quarry to wash the sand down the chute.
Photo 2 is an engine driven compressor in the foreground with a loading shovel behind.
Photo 3 are crushers on the side of the hill.
