There are similar guns here in Ireland, some overlooking the harbour in Wicklow, or Arklow, i forget which. I remember as a kid with my sisters climbing on them. My sister fell off one and hurt her leg. Which much to my annoyance, put an end to our day out.

A pleasant morning spent taking pictures for future paintings. It would have been rude not to photograph some of the rusted hulks for this thread!

Proper relaxed on h&s, I was given free rein to wander about the entire rail yard, carriage sheds and workshop.

We stumbled across this on the beach near us. The boat frame is mostly long gone although some of it still appears if the tide has washed the sand away but spent a while looking over the engine.

I reckon it's a British Polar M-type two-stroke. The big hole in the crankcase is where a starting air compressor sits, driven by the piston rod of the the crank-driven scavenge piston, which slightly pressurises the charge air, and also blows the exhaust out of the exhaust ports. ( The scavenge piston also makes a fantastic deep noise like the bass beat at a techno party )
The oblong slots are where the reed valves go, just like a Suzuki or Yamaha 250 bike from the 70's to control the air flow.

(By the way if anyone knows where to get some injector nozzles for the smaller version, the Polar K-type, please pass it on, they seem to be unobtainable.)

I reckon something very large gauge. It seems both a blessing and a curse being a museum; lots of free stuff, but also a lot of junk, and limited space to put it all. Half of the wagons probably won’t see restoration I’d imagine. Some more pics of the old thing slowly rusting out the back of the machine shop, nice old tractor too.
