Yes we have shipped loads of anvils for people.
As long as the seller will stick it on a pallet no problem.
Driving so far is a waste of time and fuel. Not only that but it won't do your car or your back any favours sticking a proper one in the boot

I ended up with mine because the previous buyer drove a massive distance to get it. In a fiesta. The seller wouldn’t load it and told them to do one. Stuck it on a pallet for me.

Well whaddaya know…..
Dragged out shopping by Mrs DomDom, garden centres, craft shops and the like when I spot this little beauty. Utterly nasty with all that paint but nothing that a can of paint stripper won’t solve. The main thing is the top is flat apart from a minor ding.

Delivery for a tenner as well. She was asking 550, offered 350 and she accepted. I got the impression she is glad to see the back of it and I might have got away with less, but I’m happy with the price. Happy days.

Now to paint strip it, jetwash it and cover it in oil.

@fizzy Don’t need the pallet any more, but thanks for the offer. That one in Lanarkshire still hasn’t come back to me after sending a message 2 days ago.

Fingers crossed for you Domdom but it looks like it has a fair bit of damage on the top surface.

They can be machined flat if the hardened steel plate is still good (and still present!).

Bounce test will tell you its condition but it does look quite reasonable.

I know I've posted it before but here is mine, made from a piece of flat bottom rail, its not used for hot work just sheet metalwork and the odd flattening / straightening job

mine has a roundtuit holding up progress.

In the mean time I have set to it with a 40 grit belt sander (big boy one from the hire shop) as per advise from @hotponyshoes and that’s made it much better and will do for now

It’s a lot flatter than the back of my vice and will do what I want. Not setting up a forge, just want something to hammer on that’s reasonably flat. My bench is too springy and I’ve ruined a decent vice with hammering over many years.

My contribution here. A 28 pound and a 4 ounce anvil. The little one had a screw in jaw, but is worthless as a vice.

Ideally it still has the high carbon steel face, difficult to tell from the photo. Sometimes they can come off!

What you're looking for is a bounce like this:

The higher the rebound the better, makes the anvil "lively" and helps tremendously when hitting stuff on it.

I have a few anvils.

My large 150kg Brooks I got when I was around 14 or 15. Having shown an interest in blacksmithing, thanks to Jack Andrews "edge of the anvil" book, Dad put an ad in the wanted columns of the paper and it came up 500km away in Napier. He was a commercial traveller, so put the trailer behind the Leyland P76 and picked it up. If I had been a week earlier, I could have had the whole forge shop, but it had just been sold. I got the 6” leg vice and bench shear. The anvil apparently had come over to Australia after the war, sat outside in the outback for many years before coming to New Zealand. It had very little use.
The other big anvil was a souvenir on holiday to Dunedin a few years after from an antique shop. Got it shipped up. There is no brand on it, but I suspect it is a Peter Wright.

The small Peter Wright anvil (53kg) on the steel stand was a purchase when I was at school aged around 16 from a second hand tool shop In Papakura, Auckland. I brought it home on the school bus. My main recollection was I got some strange looks, and it was damn heavy.

The small Brooks (50kg or so) was a present from my mother who found it in her travels around junk shops and decided it was to cute and to cheap to pass up.

I also have the obligatory railroad track anvil as a bench anvil for setting rivets on the leatherworking and sewing bench.

I also have a small paperweight anvil in the china cupboard which we had on our wedding cake.

That is a hobbing foot for repairing soles. I have a broken one on the hearth that was my dad's. A last was the mould a shoe is formed round but it seems the terms are now interchangeable. If it's fine tomorrow I'll dig my anvil out of the shed and put it on it's block.

I like the way you casually slip in a picture of a gigantic power hammer without even mentioning it.

If I had one of those you'd never hear the end of it...

First one cost me £5 and they were glad to see the back of it as no one wanted it and they didn’t want to shift it. 300Tdi cylinder head for scale!

Second one was free but was larger and more worn than the first.

I'm certainly no blacksmith but everyone bangs on about how flat an anvil's surface is and I don't see it as vital that it is a flat machined finish. If as @Screwdriver says the rebound is 80-90% then with the hammer you should be able to flatten things pretty well. Blacksmithing is different to engineering, you are never going to hammer something out to within 0.001" etc.

@Domdom see how it cleans up and post a pic then, the damage looks to be there but you don't really know until the paint it stripped. You will generally be working more towards the horn anyway of where the damage is. Good price with the stand too.
