anvil novice question , why the chain ? does it deaden the ring or just salesmanship

Not on it's stand yet but here's mine with a Lambretta for scale. I think this one was a reject as it has a chill in the casting on the other side but at £20 I wasn't going to turn my nose up at it.

I certainly wouldn't bang on about flatness except to suggest if the surface is flat that is a good sign of low use. You expect a bit of sway in a really old example which is not a huge problem and not the sort of surface flatness you're looking for. The only real problem is a locally non-flat surface i.e. pitted, dinged, chipped or missing top plate.
Can't see with Dom's anvil what the surface condition might be so fingers crossed it's ok. If it is really bad (I see some pretty bad markings) then it might be a good idea to have it skimmed to take out local imperfections. Also no idea what the rebound might be on that one either. One would hope for 80-90% but that's a job for a ball bearing to discover.

Yes it deadens the ring considerably. All sorts of ways to do that but there is a law of diminishing returns with magnets, clamps and rubber matting etc. I found the chain quietened it down sufficiently on it's own but you probably want to wear ear defendeds anyway so...
i'd guess that the majority on here with anvils aren't working blacksmiths etc, so a perflactly flat top / square edges etc isn't the end of the world anyway. Mine is just needed as something to hit hot metal on to form it a bit better when I need to, won't be producing any swords or fancy wrought iron works on it..

It is still a cracking little tool, just because bigger versions are available (!) doesn't mean you can't use it to do useful work.
I keep a lump of iron hanging around in the house just for hitting things on. Tempted now to see if I can find a decent little anvil shaped anvil!
unfortunately use these more than my real anvil....

Ha ha Hi Arthur I will see about getting a pic tomo, in all fairness they did come in the state they are in. I have seen a few vids where they get welded and repaired but there's enough top space for my needs lol, I was actually using one of them today, first time in ages they dont get a lot of use, but when you need to beat some thing its the best thing in the world
