Show us your bench vice(s)

Is anyone familiar with a 'Schmidt Improved Vice'? There is one entered in tonight's auction, it's in great condition apart from a missing jaw insert. It will probably go cheap because it's rusty, not a record nor painted record blue!

The only reference I can find is this patent.

It looks very similar to this vice, the movement on it feels very smooth & tight, very like a machine vice. Patent is from 1893 so the vice could be very old.

One I was using today, on a site. The maintenance team lent me a small space to work, 4 meters away from a free vend coffee machine.

This is it.

I was successful in my pursuit of the vice. Someone else was interested so I ended up giving £35 for it but it's still cheap for a good vice.

It's in great condition & it sports some beautiful lines. I'll let the pictures do the talking.

It says 'SCHMIDT'S IMPROVED VICE PATENTED'

I really like the way the front jaw curves down to the handle.

The handle has seen some action.

The half nut is at the front of the vice where the bolt head is, I think there should be another bolt where the hole is.

It's a big beast - that's a record no 6 it's sitting on. Very heavy too, I nearly busted myself lifting it up there! The jaws are 4.25" wide, 3.5" throat & it opens to a massive 7.25".

As I said before, it's very smooth in operation with very little slop in the front jaw. Made to much tighter tolerances than any bench vice I've came across.

I've just had a read through the patent & it is the same vice and it appears that has a quick release mechanism! :cool:

Have to check that out tomorrow!

Had a look earlier & the quick release either isn't working or doesn't exist.

I will investigate when I get around to stripping & cleaning it.

A few pics of a Parkinson swivel rear jaw vise that I picked up a couple of months ago. Not at all sure what my intentions are - veering towards leaving it as it is with lots of patina.
