A quick update on the Vices I and cleaning/restoring/repairing.

Parkenson Wood working.



The only damage, a simple repair.



Does not show, and both main parts now painted.


Part assembled and Now I am waiting for the paint to fully harden. Plus some new UNC C/.sunk bolts to arrive.
I plan to use some oak for the jaw linings.

Record 74.

Still not sure what to do with this, yet. But it was sized. So after a few days in my home brew hot penetrating fluid, it was still sized.

So.



A few good wedges inserted and it moved, well almost.




A few good blows and a length off elm and it parted company. The end shot is how much the end was deformed.

Record 23.

Since I first restored and repaired it. Some one in that club decided he could do better.

Here are the results.





Smashed slide side bar. Smashed jaw mount. Worse still he has striped the threads out, broke a m8 hard bolt in the hole. The tried to drill it out.






My first repair was using the UNC blots taped through a Hot shaped bar and into the remains of the threads.

He clearing did not understand the "fix" and now has all but ruined the Vice.

Any tips on how to restore and repair this?

He is a "Arm Chair Expert". He forced the vice apart, I quote him:
"I saw how they dismantled a vice on U Tube"

I believe I have a spare body/rear jaw for a 23 if you're ever up this way, TYA. It's buried in one of the sheds somewhere.

I will bare that in mind, so far my "repair" ideas are stuck on the slide part and coffee.

I'd just braze a patch of metal onto that slide. It takes no stress as such there. The slide on this one is the same, with a chunk missing.

That was the plan.
When heated to braze in new metal so much crud came out of the metal. I was burning good gas on bad metal.

So Plane B was hatched, over a coffee.



Drill some holes, Chemical metal so welding rods. Solder a frame work. It just need to look good. As you say not load bearing.




Clamp a frame work into place. Fill with glass fibre and chemical metal.




Let set, Now when it is fully cured I will dress it back.

My two wood vices are done, a Record 52 and 53A, both are my favourite style (without the RD number on). A matching set! I used oxy acetylene to heat and bend the tommy bar on the big one straight. Both painted with Hammerite smooth blue.

Will i picked up a leg vice today. It wasn't the one i originally wanted as that had already gone but this one seems alright. It's only a little 3 footer but was only £30. It's seized up but should come apart fairly easily. If anyone knows anything about it if appreciate any info. Cheers

Got it all apart, plus gas and a bit of elbow grease.

Found a bit of damage to the end of the screw hopefully won't find anymore when i clean it up.

I'll probably just wire brush it as its to big for the electrolysis tank. I did find this Mark on a few of the bits, makers mark perhaps.

The bolt holding the movable leg to the fixed leg may have a "Lug" holding it in place into the flat plate.
So turning it back and forth is not a choice. Hot oil and diesel will soak through or you could try this.

Mix citric acid and cheep flour in a 2 to 1 mix, add water to make a thick paste, think butter icing thick
Add to your vice, let harden a bit, enough to hold it self. Then wrap cling film round the vice. Leave and let magic work.
