Knocked up a rotating base today rather rough and ready but should do the job. All the materials salvaged from work skip

Main spindle is 80mm, rotates on a ball bearing to raise us the weld slightly and aid turning. Couple of m16 bolts to lock it off and can insert a m10 bolt in front to completely lock it if I need to do anything heavy

Should make the Swindens an even more versatile device. Swindens themselves had a crack at a rotating base, bit clumsy if you look at their site. I am surprised they haven't made a much better effort and redesigned the entire model to incorporate a rotating base, rather than just tack one on.

I guess thats British industry resting on their laurels again....

Yup, already saw those listed on the bay. I like the Fortis, but have too many vices already; should sell some myself.

The fortis is a nice one. My prioritys have changed seems pointless having vices sitting under a bench doing nothing when I only use one. I've some wiggle room on the fortis price. If you change your mind pm me

I would snap that fortis up if only I was in the UK, saw one here once but they wanted $300 for it, dream on... most I’ve ever paid for a vice is $75 and I felt that was pushing it!

Yes Dan, that was the vice you were after. But sadly the man who offered money for it has let me down. So I swoped it for the Woden.

Hope you don't mind, it was gathering dust.

I think that is the late model stuff when Record took over production. You can see the Woden blue colour has changed to a bit closer to Record rounded blue.

The bench mount lug is to low. Needs to be raised up to top of the spring, by the curve back.

To help free it, warm the screw cover to loosen the grease, it will help.

Could be, but there is a MOD Arrow on it, with RAF stamp and store number. I think the date is 52/58. Hard to read.

My Parkinson, not a No 6. as I first thought. But a No.8. It showed up when it was being cleaned.

It now will be left alone for a few days to allow the paint to fully harden.


But why red?



2 reasons.
It was originally red, the remains were hard to shift.
Plus on the mounting lugs for the bolts on the side was a worn GPO stamp.

So red it was, red it will be and I like it red.

Got started on the Record 36 today, got it mostly stripped except the jaws themselves, need to go buy an impact driver to get them out. This vice has seen little to no use barely any wear at all! No mug but a standard 12" 30cm scale instead. It's a big beastie!
