My swindens diy rotating base came in handy earlier today, had a 2.7m lengh of timer in securing brackets for a pergola, too lazy to shift welder etc for it to clear, 2 bolts and can position it, all made from scrap I had. Love it

Here's some pics of my second Steelrack instantaneous vice, it's a lump , the one on my bench has leather lined wooden jaws,a flick of the handle locks a pice of timber solid , also in pic are 2 3/4 lefthand threaded bars and brass split nuts ,

Agree - yours is the Entwistle and Kenyon, I believe - I have the Syers, rack-type QR from the same time (both patented in 1870s, both made in Bradford area) - mine is built in to my bench and even more useful/reliable than I thought it would be - my end vise is a first gen Parkinsons - patented 1880s and also made in Bradford region - precursor to the Record QR etc.

Love using a vice with over a century's use and still good for another.

Hi , my other Steelrack is built into my bench and was in use 10 minutes ago , when I replace the top I intend to use it as an end vice , both are stamped entwisle and kenyon on the toothed part the cam operates , what would the value of these vices be ?

Mine cost £10 from an antique dealer who usually over-prices tools - it's worth 20x that to me, built in to the bench, but I'm not selling.


[I seem to remember some blogger recommending them a while back - as they're rare, the price probably shot up, at least for a while].

ps I believe they are marked steel rack because they also had a cast iron rack version (?)
pps just for the record - you have two -is there any difference between them? and can you tell what the original colour was?

I paid 40 quid each for mine , would like the 7 inch version , Would possibly sell one if the price was right ,
