How long did you leave it in caustic soda?

It will work, over time.
Done it on vices and at least 2 engine blocks with seized pistons.
What is the ratio of caustic soda to water?
Also, what is best, soaking in caustic soda or soaking in diesel?

1 table spoon of caustic to 3lt of water. As a starter, then adjust to suit.
You want warm water and you want it to lightly fizz when adding the item.
This will remove most paints and to some degree caked oil.
Soaking is diesel will take time but will allow fluid to seep into al the areas.

Finally got round to making this..
Look like this...
Couldn't get all the abuse scars out but at least it now works and is Roundel Blue like it should be.
Will probably move it on as I have two No.22s already.

There's a few mentions of Gressel vices in this thread. Whilst I was logged in to a remote pc today on a course I set Youtube going - up popped a vice restoration video. I thought - how did they know? I'm not logged in there as me! But when I saw how many views - 25 million! I guessed it was just a busy video. Worth a watch though -

Sorry, The spring I have is attached to a complete vice, and its too good to break for parts.
Don’t blame you. Wouldn’t want anyone to do that. Is buying some spring wire a good alternative?

Haven't tried spring wire, let me know how you get on. I've only ever had one broken spring but managed to replace it with a brand new one on a fluke piece of luck

My neighbour sourced some spring wire to make a new one for a Parkinson that I have. I'll ask him where he got it. It was very difficult finding a supplier with the diameter and length needed. And it's a lot longer than you imagine. Basic maths to work out a ballpark figure.
