I got this little mill vice from @eLuSiVeMiTe, stripped and cleaned with a nylon wheel not too aggressive, base plate is a different steel, not cast, so put that in citric for 24 hours as I want an etch and may paint it, will heat & oil the main castings. It's a lovely little thing & really nicely made, even the screws are really nice. Apart from the fasteners there is a number stamp on every part.

The makers stamp "The Cincinnati Milling Machine Co" Never heard of them on vices?

Don't think I can live with the holes, beggers belief how depth can be so misjudged, but my welding and the wee 151EN probably wouldn't cut it, what's more grinding accurately flat without damaging the rest Ideas?

Good call, did that to a couple of casting holes in the Swindens vice I got awhile back.

Haven't tried spring wire, let me know how you get on. I've only ever had one broken spring but managed to replace it with a brand new one on a fluke piece of luck

I was thinking on those lines to begin and it would be an easy option, is there a filler with a more durable metallic finish than dull grey hard plastic?...I may end up doing that tho.

Don't weld it! I tried it on the table of a pillar drill & warped it! If it's a blind hole I would try melting in some lead or the jb weld.

Hi All - I have been lurking on the forum for a few months, learning what I can about welding. The forum has been a great source of information.
I had never welded before, always fancied it so bought myself a TIG welder over lock down and have been really enjoying making various projects starting with a bench from scarp and a welding cart. A few of my older relatives would have been welders in Harland and Wolff many decades ago and one of them gave my father this old vise over 50 years ago and he passed it on to me today. I was looking online to see if i could learn anything about it, but could find nothing so I remembered this section and within a minute I believe I have identified it as an early Peter Wright and Son parallel vise, I would love to restore this as best possible. If any one could advise or point me in the right direction, i'd be very grateful.

Gordito - that's quite a vice - if those Records beneath it have at least 7in jaws, it's big (how wide are the jaws?).

In catalogues 1900-WWII they tended to sell for maybe 50% more than a Record equivalent.

I believe this type was not painted as sold (maybe a bituminous or stove black type coat?), so a clean and grease of the moving parts, maybe a lick of linseed oil on the rest is what I'd do - but it's your vice (lucky).

Hi there. I'm a new member but keep ending back on this site as I have several Record vices and like to know their history. The most recent is a record 36 with the serial no: 666598. I've been led to believe this indicates the date, but can't make sense of that. Any help welcome. Also was the original colour the mid blue shade often seen on vices, and if so does anyone have a colour code as I'm trying to put it back to original. Many thanks
