I might have a vice problem. I have 3, one big Record bolted to the workbench, one smallish on the welding bench and one big ish Fortis that I lug outside for mucky outside work. So I absolutely did not need another one.

So of course I bought another one. ……………………...

I have analysed your situation, and yes, you do have a vice problem; the problem is, you do not have enough of them.

Anyone help on UK Registered Design owners/dates??

Small vice (similar to usual 00 size - jaws just over 2 1/4ins wide) with anvil RD 94546. I have seen another with the same RD No but larger - neither has makers name.

I also have a basic vice with RD NO 689821, again no name - that one like the basic non Quick Release English engineers vice, later made by everyone and their son in all sizes No 00 to 200lbs No 9.

I found one site (lost it again just now) that gave a date range for Rd Nos but don't know how to find who the design was registered to.

Thoughts - both by Parkinson of Shipley? Seems to have his name all over the QR (Perfect) models, but not usually the plainer 'Handy' models. BUT I have also seen one of virtually identical design with an attached plate saying Anglo Lewis (Sam Lewis Anglo works of Dudley, who made nails and tools including vices).

Why did many vice makers before about WWI go to the effort of casting in a size or number but not their name? Was this to allow re-selling under a shop/wholesalers name etc?

That's the vice - I had forgotten - had seen this website a while back, but the photo at top wasn't there.
I tried to ask him if he'd confirmed parky as the RD owner and tell him I liked the site but the contact link to David W Fell just tries to sell me a new search engine.

I was told, true or not.
The ones that were assembled with bolts, screws and nuts. Were to allow them to be dismantled and shipped over seas. Took up less cargo space.

It does make sense, but I can not find anything to prove or dis prove it.

Interesting.

I'd assumed it was for ease of casting (need good quality castings for vices - some current vices are not) and machining and that these were the (easier to make well) early versions of the economy but good Handys (or Wodens or Lewis Anglo)? Casting re-entrants can still be places of weakness and machining in a hole is easy enough but does need the right set up.

The first Parkinsons were bolted halves, but unlikely for shipping purposes.

Really? The green vice has the same number as the Parkinson from my post, lacks the makers name and has nuts with studs, not bolts retaining the static jaw What makes you believe it is a Woden?

That design is no Parkinson that I've ever seen. Could be wrong though.

Registered Design: on a silverware website www.925-1000.com it appears that the UK Reg Design number 94546 would have been 1888, which would tie in well with Parky's entry into vice manufacturing (about 10 years after their neighbours making J Syers and Entwistle and Kenyon vices) and the 689821 RD would be 1922 if I read things aright.

I'm sure there is also some way of checking the owner's name to confirm?

The advantage of a garage integral to the house is that your vices are never far away, though the disadvantage is the wife uses it to extend her utility room!
