Paramo No 43 near identical to the Record No 21 - I have - both have 3"1/4" jaws and quick release.

Acid dipped it - cleaned up with rotary wire brush - coat of International Yacht Toplac paint

So how old do you reckon the Paramo vice is?

It is have "1911" stamped on it - so someone pinched it from the MOD at some time!

Probably 1940s........I think Record came back after the war as Record Ridgeway....still used the Record trade name though

WH Clay was bought by F Parramore's in the late 1970's, Paramo Tools was the "tool division" of F Parramore, and had existed for many years beforehand. In 1981 the tool division was the subject of a management buy out from the foundry and broke away, setting up at Rockingham Street & Harrison Street in Rotherham, as Paramo Tools Limited. The Directors that arrived at WH Clay in January 1981 were not the same Directors that ran F Parramore in Chapeltown. The foundry in Chapeltown continued until Fenner cancelled their order and the receiver was called in, the last cast was made, I think 05/06/81 after which the foundry was demolished and a housing estate built.

Drum full of sand - 10mm plate welded to it - pipe vice and a small Record No3 vice mounted to it.

Oil drum is 35" high - perfect height for a vice.

You must drill a hole in the drum - as it will "creak" when it gets hot and cold - you will notice I have 20mm hole in the front of mine.

Mine does not actually have sand in it - I filled mine with old bags of tile grout when I first made it. As my workshop was next to tillers yard and they skiped half used bags. Then I been posting old spark plugs into it for years. Mine is about 2/3rds full now - about 150kg of ballast at a guess.

The lovely thing about a round drum with a square plate on it - if you do move it - you can tilt and roll it - even with loads of weight in it.

Plus for welding things in the vice the earth clamp goes in it OK. Plus you can use G clamps on the edge.

Yes it is lovely simple idea. Every garage in Africa has a bench made out of oil drums. I have seen full length benches made from two or three drums with worktops made from laminated scaffold boards (not so pretty but functional).

This is the second drum my bit of 10mm plate has been on in 35years - the plate has loads of holes in the top on the vice corners - where it has had differing vices on in the time I have had it.

I have seen them with three short bits of angle iron welded to the top rim of the drum - so you can mount a wooden top on them.

If I was to make another one - I would save a mountain of brake discs/duel mass flywheels - cut a slot in the top - post them in and add a bag of postcrete to stop them moving about when I roll the drum about.

I will stop dreaming now - and go back to the idea of a waste oil drum filled with scrap.

Oops, thought it was a ‘show us your bench’ thread. That will teach me to post in the wee hours of the morning.

But anyway, I have this Record #3 my dad gave me, I’m sure it is the same one we had in our garage way back in the early seventies, still going strong. Does that sound plausible?

I have another bigger one, plus a rotating one, plus one I bought in the Philippines that is fabricated from cut steel plate and stick welded together. An amazing amount of work, and I paid £10 for it.

This was in my old shop, the vices are in a box somewhere waiting to be called into duty once again soon.

your Record 3 story sounds v 'plausible' - my main bench vices are from around 1890-1900 - seem to have all the marks of a long working life, but not abuse, and still going strong - even the quick releases, which have some thinner sections - Parkinsons and Syers.

Big green, pipe red and black one are from local scrap yard, green still had paint on screw,black one was broken in half but i managed to weld it with 7018, the special one that has plumber pliers was 80 euros, not 800 but 80, got it from a local machinist that worked in USA.

Its depends how you position the pins, most likely it was used for machining castings.

I've not been up to much, only vices I've bought are the Parkinsons swivel jaw (think I posted that here) and a 2" jaw Swindens that's missing one of each jaw insert.

Nearest design I've seen to that one is a Sevo machine vice.

There looks to be a name plate on the top of the vice ?

Me neither. I managed to find only one like this on another forum. You can find vices that are meant for irregular workholding but nothing like this.
