The Record 35P (the "P" denoting Plain Screw, not QR variant) I recently tidied was binding similarly (though perhaps not as much). With mine it was just gack & rust from neglect and many years sitting around unused.Just acquired this Record 36, which seems to of had little use in its life. The jaws only open about 4" though so currently stripping it. I cant retract the slide from the body though, it gets stuck with about 2" left, probably for the same reason as the opening issue. I cant see anything that's binding, apart from maybe the rear most runner blocks. Any ideas ?

I'm no engineer though nor Welder (let's call my welds "functional" as a kindness)
Could be a few things, might need the quick release spring tightened a notch or two, might need the half nut removed and cleaned to get crud out of the threads, might need a burr or two removed from the slide top/side surfaces where someone used it as an anvil. If a vice sticks when opened after being tightened, like a jump after loosened what is the problem?
Not a plain screwthread Samsonia but I have a plain screwthread Parkinsons Perfect Vise that is partially made of brass.I have just picked up a Samsonia Perfect 39 vise model J.
However, un-usually this vise is a plain ACME screwthread, and as such is NOT quick release.
Has anyone come across a plain Samsonia Perfect no.39 model J before?
I have had a quick look and it does not seem to have been altered at all. (however, something, possibly a plate, is missing from the underside).
Andy.
Any chance of getting a photo of the underside? Not a plain screwthread Samsonia but I have a plain screwthread Parkinsons Perfect Vise that is partially made of brass.
That base looks a lot like my Parkinson No9 Model F which is a QR. I think your vice has a common base to the QR version - so what's "missing" is the QR mechanism that would be mounted thereHe's a couple of photo's, one showing the screw holes underneath for a possible missing plate.

Isn't that one of the all-steel "unbreakable" top-drawer Records?
