Yes I've noticed that they often get passed off as Records. I will always find it odd that a firm as proud of their products as Parkinsons didn't properly put their name on the things. Ok some had a sticker but that's a bit lame !

Got the vice cleaned up today, along with a couple of other projects. The parts need paint, but not sure about what colour other than blue ?Being that it was local, and I have an old surface grinder, my itchy finger just had to put in a bid; which I was surprised won it.
Its a Jones & Shipman grinding vice in excelent mechanical condition, but very dirty. Its also missing the moving jaw face, which might have been what put off the bidders; but that's not a problem, as I have parallel that could be modified to fit. This is going to clean up nice.

I'd never knew Colchester made workbenches, but when I saw the badge in one of the photos. I figured it was a quality build so made an offer. Didn't notice the two drawers were missing in the photos shown until I collected it, when I saw the slide tracks under the table. Its a nice bit of kit. If you still have that catalogue, I'd appreciate if you could post photos of what the drawers looked like ?
Thanks for posting the images ! I see it was set up for a vice, so the existing holes were "not" made by someone else. The weight of the vice would also help as a counter balance as the pillar is offset where it attaches to the table. Great.
The table top and perimeter banding is 1/4" thick plate with supporting ribs beneath, so sturdy enough to attach a good sized vice. Due to the location of the mounting holes in relation to the ribs, I am going to mount the 4" Swinden's I fixed up as the four bolt pattern in its base plate will clear the table's ribs. Just need to get the proper size bolts now.

I well remember training on Colchester Student lathes whilst an apprentice Fitter and Turner. They took a hell of a lot of punishment from the legions of teenagers who had gone through the dockyard school over many years. The older ones were preferred, for even though speed changes had to done by adjusting a banjo and physically removing and replacing geared wheels you could get a more generous cut on the job and get things done much more quickly. Coincidently, about 15 years latter I moved to Colchester and lived less than a mile from where they had been made.
