looks in great order, what were the markings on the bottom of cast?I'm blaming you @ranger08 for what happend later yesterday
Now that I was already finding out something about these vises, when that was done, I said to myself, "Why don't you find out what prices these pieces are being offered for today?"
The first thing I found out was that the shape of the top with the flat, angled surfaces was retained for many models, but they had to make do with a much simpler guide for the movable jaw instead of the actually interesting dovetail guide.
Just as I was about to give up, because the version I was looking for was simply not on offer - except for two pieces that absolutly had had it behind them at outrageous prices - a fresh offer came in that I had not seen before ...

You can see that in the meantime the comrades had probably looked for and found a way to save material and time (the bevels on the underside and the abandonment of individual batch markings in the casting), but kept the basic design for vises of this size, where parallelism of the jaws was important.
Until, shortly after midnight our time, the receipt of my payment by bank-to-bank real-time transfer was finally confirmed.
Your specimen remains the nicer one, @ranger08 , but mine will also look acceptable again once it gets here - cleaning, rust removal in warm citric acid in an ultrasonic bath, drying with hot air and extensive oiling - that should do it.

i emailed manager Thomas of SZM Spannwerkzeuge GmbH as it was fairly close by on google maps! and were a clamping company and my lack of understanding of the language. A long "bow" i know. lovely guy who sent a lovely email along with

It seems to be a common misunderstanding that SZ later became SZM and for some time I was indeed on this track, but then I had read that what is now SZM used to be the only manufacturer of collets in the GDR and was able to rule out via a roundabout way that they had ever made vises.

I have already shown some before and after treatments on tools and vises, some electrolytic, some as quoted by you.
At some point someone here wrote how boring the thread had become, so much rust removal
.... from then on I left it and only presented my new acquisitions in the today-I-acquired thread - if applicable with before-after and chosen method - nobody has complained there yet.I often use citric acid - available everywhere and cheap - if the effort for an electrolysis bath is not worth it.
The ultrasonic bath is always ready for use in the barn workshop and with it the process can be considerably deepened and accelerated.
When old tools from a rescue come in again, I pepper them in there and then go over them with the rotating wire brush.
Finally, oil it thoroughly.

Surely a vice would have been stripped of anything usable while the rest would have been recycled? Secondly, would this stamp have been out of sight?

Internal stamp to say that part failed the QA inspection.
Does not mean it had no values to them.
A example if it was for a special order with tighter than normal specs. It could of failed those requirements.
But be in spec for other use.
Record no75, this has come up for sale in my local area, i note its round nose and lettering being"No 75" however 75 is large and at the bottom of the vice. im thinking age would be just after ww2 as the "no 75" is in the same position as the steel vices pre war then after that, the non steel vices the "75" was more in the middle position. thoughts?

Other than cosmetically, it looks to be in very good order. It would appear an early model by the square screw thread. Does it have the patent number in raised letters on the opposite side ?

Here's one I just picked up for the princely sum of £9.50
It's an old steel Woden, I've never had a Woden before.
Needs a bit of work including a new jaw. This is one I might actually paint as it's pretty tatty.
Anybody any idea if the green under the red is the original colour ?
Any idea on its year also welcomed.

Nice bargain steel Woden!
Woden standard colour for their steel vices was "Woden Green"
No patent as this is no longer a steel vice, just a cast iron, but it’s lettering suggests it’s age is just after the transition from to steel to iron.

"Normal" (grey) Cast Iron is a material that is quite strong in compression, but not particularly strong in tension. It is also quite brittle. Steel, and later on Ductile Cast Iron (aka Ductile Iron and Spheroidal Graphite Cast Iron) are both much stronger in tension and much tougher. If you are going to seriously tighten the jaws onto something and then hit it with a big hammer, a steel or DI vise has a much greater chance of surviving the process than a (grey) Cast Iron equivalent.
DI started to replace steel sometime after WW2 at Record. The Steel vices tend to look less pretty as Steel is horrible to cast compared to grey CI. DI seems to fall somewhere between the two, judging by the appearance of castings I've seen on different vices.
I'd take either Steel or DI over grey CI every time.

It’s my belief and people correct me if I’m wrong
the early examples of the 75 were all steel, steel slide and cast steel body
then after ww2 were steel side and cast grey iron body
then around 1965 were steel slide and pearlitic malleable iron pmi which had higher compressive strength than iron
pmi was used on the quality vices after ww2 like the 30, 110 series and then even the 84, and actually most heavy duty vices changed to this after ww2
( I have noted pmi or ductile iron greatly improved the accuracy and finish of the castings, some of the early steel castings of Record were just plain awful as steel is a lot harder to cast)
pmi may have been developed during ww2 advances in construction technology ?
steel has a much higher tensile strength than either,
cast iron is hard, easily cast, machined and is corrosion resistant however is brittle and cracks under extreme shock treatment
so when I was trying to date the 75 I was looking at the timeline of the different material sequence, although I’m not sure if the 75 went from steel to mi or di straight away

Nice find, I've always fancied one of those. A good sign and a clue to it's age is the rounded end on the main screw handle connector. That must have taken a fair bit more effort to machine and I assume that indicates more care made during production and more likely to be an earlier cast steel version.
The later vices have squared off plain machined ends. Again if they can't be bothered to make a decent job of it, you wonder if they bothered to make a decent vice....

As mentioned many times in past posts I love my 75, in a plutonic sense of course. I've been told mine is an early one so it's a good 75 years old. Love the look, its only original once, so they say.

Always pays to be careful Carsten, just ask Prince Andrew.
Thanks. It is great vice to use. Cleaned the jaws with fine grit micro mesh and whipped with an oily rag, it will see me out.That vice exudes character.
