Went into the local tip again today. Picked up this Record No.2 vice (and chair) for the workshop - £5
A bit of surface rust, but in great condition with absolutely no slop....another winner me thinks

I had m12s in it, but they had slack either side and the old man made the point that the bolts should be tight fitting, especially as I'm often putting force on stuff clamped in it... 5/8 bolts were stupidly expensive, but I know someone who "fell" over 3 x m16...and just the right length for my needs..
vice is iron so a sudden shift might have equalled a nasty crack/split in the iron....
I bought mine as my record 1 was too small for what i had in mind and research suggested and was correct that old records are good value for money and far better than anything made now for anything like sane money...
if its lucky it might get a coat of paint at some point...
I can't be bothered to look back through 36 pages to find out the name but the people who made that rear sliding vice are still going, mostly making machine vices but they did have two or three bench vices in their catalogue.Definitely far better than the tat Irwin is churning out under the Record brand. Bar Swindens, do we actually have any manufacturers of vices still here these days?
This is my biggest vice 150mm or 6" in old money you won't see many of these in this countryView attachment 60708
try this with a front sliding jaw 10inch easy and it's above the bench not hanging on the frontView attachment 60712
£420 for a new one. There's a 550 page PDF catalogue on that page, if you scroll right down to page 534, they have the rear sliding bench vice (All the other pages are really boring CNC machine vices).
GRESSEL PS 125-1
I do want it, but I really have no use for it. Unless I buy a huge milling machine to match.Anyone wanting a huge machine vice?
