Not particularly rare in the UK, if its in original paint though that is rare. Usually they are just rust coloured
I have an early one that appears to be in original paint, however it is grey. No idea when they they changed from grey to red, or if the grey on mine is original or just a very good repaint.

Grey was used on Royalfleet ships/
The OP vice has paint on the handle area, even ne tat was not painted.
But some who were taken back into the GPO service from Civil defense were sl;ape painted red.

agree prob a repaint but in something like the original colour
I've seen on old Parkys that the original red colour is a thick coat, that acquires a black surface over time and is thick and crumbly over time whereas the original green or grey (and dark grey/black for the Cocker bros version) coats seem relatively thin and hard
I think the size 7 was the 'serious workshop standard' and thus the most common
note that this has Parkinson's (early) and Vise (not so early) ---- about 1895-1905??? (see also 'waistline', hex nuts and front jaw screws)

Were the screw heads (I'm sure there is a better term for this, and someone will know) , painted on Parkinson's?

Not sure. The only two are those on the QR cover. I always leave those bare.

Those two visible on the side above are part of the casting.

yes im pretty sure parkys did paint the main spindle heads, knobs, screw heads etc

I realised I could do with plain smooth aluminium jaws in my no 23 today. But then I have a shelf full of Record vices now so I'll fit aluminium jaws and leave them permanently in my No 3. This will save time in the future having both vices bolted down permanently one with the alu smooth jaws.

Going to paint it and replace the old bent spring at the same time. Used metal filler on the dented sections of this vice will paint that blue to match my no 23 recently done.

Sanded down the whole vice. It did not warrant stripping all the old paint off as it was sound. There were a small number of factory casting defects I took care of those during the prep stages.

First coat of the Roudel Blue semi gloss paint applied:



China Diesel heater will run all evening and at around 6pm I'll go and apply the second/ final coat. Just using a quality gloss paint brush to apply it the vice is just small enough for me to not break out the mini foam roller.

Local barn sale today found this little lump of rusty joy, came with a ton of other stuff for £20. No ideas as to maker, age or pedigree but once stripped and cleaned should be a useful addition to the workshop. Had a little accident with the lever, it snapped off with very little pressure, shouldn't be difficult to repair.

When I said screw head, I was referring to the 'onion' on the main screw that the handle goes through and not the heads of screws or bolts. Apologies to be the source of confusion.
