The little drill vice I picked up on Sunday is proving to be a bit of a pig to dismantle, so I'm looking for some help. Removed a lot of rust and crud, got the locking mechanism working and its a bit cleaner than it was. The slides, which were held in place via a transition fit, have been removed, but that's as far as it's got. The vice won't open, but when persuaded to closes very easily. The lock seems to have something to do with a knurled fitting, picture 1 &2, which is adjusted via a grub screw beneath the spindle, picture 3. I'd like to know how to disassemble this and any ideas as to why the vice refuses to open will be helpful. The final picture shows the moving jaw and the spindle is attached the other side of the middle hole. Could this be threaded?

First post here from a bored dude in Austria

I restored a german 6 inch vise (150mm). Its over 40 kilograms heavy

it was absolutely filthy and and barely movable
it was light blue from the factory , so i used that as well.

Works like new now

Finally figured it out. The grub screw adjusts the spring which permits the movement of the jaw. Once the jaw is in a position you like the handle clamps the jaw in place. Now all cleaned up, oiled and the clamp handle repaired, happy days.

Idly looking at a retail catalogue from about 1960 - vice prices for a big 'un in shillings -- looking also at Ranger's 111 and Lambco's Mk 1 (suggests Mks 2,3 ---?)

all in shillings (!) - (Record 111 257/-) ; 113 (8in) 370/-; 25 (8in) 270/-; no6 (8in) 190/-; 518 1/2 (8.5in) 1800/- (no typo, ie wld get you nearly 10 of the no6, similar width jaw).

According to an on line site one 1960 shilling, or 5p, is the equivalent in 2023 of £1.42. So the record 111 would be £364.94, the 113 £525.40, a 25 would cost £383.40, a No6 £269.80 the 518 1/2 £2556.

Im trying to identify the small table vice below, it has original all black paint
Marples and Goodell Pratt and Millers falls shared designs in the early 1900s, many of their models a basically identical, not sure if they had an agreement and or if one supplied the other?
the following looks very similar to marples 4676 and millers falls no15 and a goodell pratt although i cant find a drawing of this

marples had a heart shaped thumb screw and was painted all black with a washer to retain the main screw
m falls were painted red and black however had the same thumb screw and main screw retaining system
im pretty sure this is a goodell pratt as i think they were painted all black

has anyone come across a marples that has thumb screw as below, or has a reference to a goodell pratt of this vice

I like Woden. They’re a bit rougher than a Record but they had more interesting shapes imo.
