I saw that Swindens on eBay, Cornwall wasn't it? It does look like it's been in the seaI take it electrolysis is in it's near future?
It's going to need a LOT of work. A long dip in the tank will be the first step. I assume is is completely siezed.
I saw that one too. Never thought it would be possible to make a vice that's already a butt ugly b*****d look any worse, but they've managed it there.
I think that's the least of my worries. It looks like someone has tried to free the front jaw with a sledgehammer. But they are tough cookies and it looks like it has survived and so long as the major cast steel items are in one piece, it can be rescued.
It won't be a restoration this time. More of a refabrication. I'll grind or machine down the surfaces and make up some copper jaws which is something I've always wanted to do. Blame Abom79 for that. Then it gets a funky paint scheme. So this isn't really a money maker for me, the best part is seeing what's under all the rust and making something usable again that was destined for the scrap bin.

I think that'll come up better than you'd expect, once it's been in the vat. Not quite as bad as yours, but that last one of mine looked a bit of a dog before I derusted everything. It turned out quite well considering how it first appeared.
I'm thinking that's the vice which may end up on that cast iron vice bench I picked up the other month. Seems possibly the best choice for that. A nice combination of limited portability and functionality, between the two.

Can you post some work in progress pictures when you get going? I love seeing wrecks come back to life, it's often interesting to see how little rust holds them solid. Abom79 is a clever bloke with an enviable workshop!
Good luck with the repairs, I'm guessing it'll be a while before you have the patient in your hands.

I have been gazumped on eBay too many times now and was determined to win this:
A big cast table off a CNC machine. Seems a shame to use for a welding bench but wtf, it fits.
I can fit a vice with T nuts...

my neighbour is going to look for the end cap if he cant find it ill slide some silicon pipe over it and heat shrink that I think

Do you not have a lathe? You could cut a thread and screw on a retaining cap or just tidy up the end and bang one on with an interference fit. The handle is now removable so you could send it to a mate to do.

It looks like that because the jaw on the handle side isnt the right one, its just one put on before storing the vice. Its a really nice old viceIs it my imagination, the camera angle or is that vice bent?

Ive just been out and taken the jaw off and its wear on the outer edge of the seat. Theres less than 1mm difference at the top and bottom when i measured between the back jaw face and the front jaw seatIt still looks wrong. The rear seat for the jaw is not vertical, whereas the one for the rear jaw is.
I put a set square in the jaws-

Here's one of my old 36's for reference.
There's a good quarter inch missing. Wonder if a larger jaw hasn't been machined down?
If the moving jaw has bent, I guess it could have worn that much but that's a LOT of wear....
