I was chatting with someone today who has over 700 axes ......
I think Mathieson's were, or became, an engineering supply house, iirc. Maybe this was made by them early on, or for them, later.
Here's some info, but not much on the later years, where they rang a bell with me...

Quite feasibly it would have been subbed out to MacFarlane's Saracen Foundry up the road, at least for the raw castings.I'm guessing it was made by them, fairly early on. Going by the styling and such, and just general gut feeling, I'm guessing this may have been early 1900's or thereabouts. No way to know for definite unless a catalogue ever crops up showing one though. One thing I can say for definite though is that it's a stout piece.
I bought my father a Gransfors Bruks Small Forest Axe for fathers day a few years ago.
He used to be in the fire brigade and would have carried his own on many call outs.
He was quite touched with receiving it.
I didn't oil it in case I paint itGive it a wipe with an oily rag at least, it'll make it look a bit better.

ThanksI always found selling as is gets better monies, a lot of people like doing things up and if its already painted as a buyer you dont know what that "maybe" covering up, so light clean is all I would recomend. and good luck .Arther
