Thanks mattf and arthur daily for your replies this threads going to get me in trouble before the bank holiday is over already lookin for another bigger brother for my little record lol.arthur you massage some silicone oil in to your vice thats spoiling it mines lucky if it gets a shot wd once in a while. As for the rain dont get me started on that the mig was in and out the garage so often today i thought we were doing the hokey cokey.Tinker Jim, glad to see someone else who actually uses their workshop for work! looks like a good solid vice to me but I know nothing about them other than to use them, would love an old Swindon, to use mind, must be really usefull. Hopefully I will find one sooner rather than later.
So Bank holiday Monday tomorrow eh, hmmm think I will have a relaxing day as its supposed to rain, take the covers of the mig and give it a blow out and clean, clean my tools and put then away and give the old vice a rub over with silicone oil to keep it sweet.nice. Arther
"What? Oh that? I've had that for years; it was under the bench / box / in that old cupboard / down John's garage for sometime I could get around to it. Not surprised you didn't see it."Yes i can tell by prolific posting on this thread you have one or two vices tucked about the place i will need a good excuse to sneak a new vice in the garage.she who must be obeyed always notices the new tools in there how i never know cause its a right mess lol
You never worked for British Leyland, did you?Ha, dont get me wrong, you cant see the bench for tools as been busy and the vice, covered in filings and yuk so its going to get its spring time treat then back to work, only reason I oil it is I sweat excessive acid, so much so that raw steel will be brown with rust after a week where I handle it.
As a nipper went to of the job engineering training for first year, along the way we had to make/machine a small vice, well after handing them in to be measured and marked they were all lined up on a long bench for us to collect and take home, could nt find mine, instructor called me over, yours is that one, totally brown with rust.
Anyways head instructor spoke to me and as soon as I finished making something I was told to take it to the correct instructor who had all been informed to measure and check straight away, as measuring a parralell(?) bar which was meant to be accurate within a thou was a joke otherwise !
Must find that vice out and put a pic on here .Arther

If its a tool it will earn its keep, thats my reasoning generally. arther
I had one of those, but it got lost in the mists of house moves.Found this bad boy today
I had one of those, but it got lost in the mists of house moves.
I'm not sure whether it was ever a commercially-made item or made by apprentices as an exercise.
