I have four vices and it's starting to become a little bit of a problem since they're just so addictive to restore!
This Ward & Payne 7" Woodworking vice I got for $30, or £15. Then the spring broke. It's currently sitting out of use in the workshop. I did not think W&P made vices, so perhaps this is made by another firm and the name applied for them. I only found one other on the net - the colour coming off looked black so I repainted it as such - restoration stopped when the spring snapped though.
The face.
This vice is my faithful work-horse, a lovely Woden 189B/1 (I think). Some tit thought they'd make it work better by hacking the QR lever off so it currently has a whitworth spanner to make it work properly. I was dead annoyed because it was covered in green paint, so I attacked it with the wire brush exactly where the original decal was, only stopping in time not to take the entire thing off. I call this one preserved, not restored (yet!). I got this one for £30.
My current project is this massive Record 34P 4+1/2", which you can find more info about the restoration of somewhere on this forum, in the projects tab I think. Next to it is my first vice, a Marples portable 6" wood vice. Again this was a restoration job and it's not quite finished. The original colour was a sort of apple green, but Hammerite didn't make that shade so I settled for blue. The ball pein hammer is a cheap Japanese thing re-handled with English Ash and painted up like a Record-Marples one. The Record was £20, the Marples was £10.
These next two I do not own anymore, I bought and preserved them for a friend to start a small workshop as they had nothing at all. They were £20 each which was a bit steep but I wanted them and tbh that's all that matters.
First up was this Gordon Tools woodworking vice. 6" jaws, four screw holes to secure it to the bench, and a fine acme screw. I added new jaws and a new washer as one had gone missing. I liked the cowling at the back to keep the screw clean of crap.
Think it must be made by someone else for Gordon though, as they made spanners and sockets. Any info appreciated.
Finally this little 3" Carter fitter's vice was cleaned up and greased for service. I liked how although the paint was worn on both, it made them look like a pair.

me pc is slow this mornin-didn't finish, meant to go on to say its great to see the old vices (
) still giving good service, my old Record was in very good nick when I passed it on and it still is. I have looked at some high priced vices now and then, 700-800 euros, and their jaws did not meet up like my old Record.
Ok, I know not everyone needs that precison, and you will most likely face the jaws etc, but for that kind of money I'd expect the jaws to meet up proper like.
BTW, those superjaws have been improved on from that model, and there is now a more compact version as well.

I like the look of that. It appears the newer version isn't as robust as the original, but there's a HD version available now, too.

Wondering if anyone can help with this - seen this old thing going for $150 which is pretty steep, £75ish but no name, looks victorian but can't be sure.

Unless I'm very much mistaken, that's a Mathieson vice. A Glaswegian company. A damned stout vice those are. This is one which I got from Taitsie. Lovely piece of kit they are, plus deceptively heavy, and good build quality. I'd honestly put them in my favourite few on the vice list, as you really can't fault them on any front. Everything about them is nicely done, and they have a mix of old and more modern vice styling about them. A lovely combination, and very pleasing to the eye, IMHO.
Ask the seller to look on the sides of the slide. There shoud be an oval shape logo somewhere on there, saying something roughly along the lines of "A Mathieson & Son(s). Saracen Toolworks, Glasgow". This is a photo of the logo. It's approximately half way down the slide on this one.
That bench it's sat on is 2' wide, btw, so you can fair gauge the size/length of it. The jaws are around 5" or so on this one, if I recall correctly. Not sure how expensive that one you've seen is, in your terms over there, but I'd personally be very tempted by that if it's in decent nick. You'll definitely have no qualms over sturdiness, quality etc.

If you look at that picture, possibly where its brown, I can see what appears to be an elephants face/head, the handle could be the trunk.
