i thought i would add to this aswell as i plan on becoming a regular visitor

iv recently moved from a tripple bay garage that the father in law owned but now iv moved out to a new workshop which is in an old barn and i have the use of the lot

pics below but only just moved in so needs loads of work doing before i can open it up to use for customers repairs etc, then i can get some real projects on the go,

As you can see there is a hell of a lot of work to do and all the hay bails need moving to another barn so there is no fire risk in the workshop.

Also my colt is under cover all the time now so i can really get cracking on the work that is needed ready to drop in the evo engine

and who else has horses in the field right next to the workshop ?? lol

give me a few weeks and it will be up to shape and the fire risk of the hay bails will be moved to another outbuilding on the farm, we have already built new doors to secure the place up and next it a major clean up and a lick of paint all around.

all the scrap metal you can see around the barn etc will be off to the scrap merchant in the next couple of weeks as they are to heavy and im in the middle of getting the tractor, forklift and HGV flatbed up and running that the owner of the farm has and then we can get it all shifted

WoW! The lathes, millers & shapers, not to mention the huge amounts of room some of you lucky lot have. Lastly i see a huge great brake press. Its enough to make a man weep. I thought i was doing well, having two decent Welders, a chop saw and a large box of tools from my Mechanic days. I would sell my house and live in a Nissan hut if i could have half of that lot and a good sized workshop to put it in. I dont know how to end this message without seeming jealous so i wont even try

PS: Sam What is that project that you are welding a chassis for? Tell us more it looks interesting. How are you welding it, TIG or MIG ? I was viewing a recent episode of Chop Cut Rebuild (Far & away the best vehicle fabrication & build show on TV) and they were saying that for the more highly stressed parts of a chassis, that they always use TIG over MIG as it gives a better penetration to a weld.

The chassis is fully Tig welded and is a toy for myself, my mate went out and bought a Metro 6R4 and I could not afford one so this is the next best thing for me.I will be putting a Suzuki 1000 K2 engine in it, well thats the thought for now as I have just purchased an Aprillia RSV 1000 V twin may use that if I put it on the road and use the other for the next project which is an Autocross/Autograss buggie the chassis is CDS and the wishbones and trailing arms will be made from T45 tubing.Welding the chassis by tig took a hell of a long time if it was done commercially it would probably be better of done by Mig on the man chassis and welding the T45 by Tig.

the best bit about me using the old barn as my workshop is i pay nothing for the use of it, all i have to do is help out around the old farm clearing rubbish etc and generaly just tidy the place up

at the moment i also have the use of electricity for nothing asd long as i dont go over the top with the electric but im planning on getting hold of a big generator or a couple of small ones and hooking them up to the electric so i wont need to worry much about the electric i use

Some really nice setups you guys have there. I'm in the process of lining my shed, so when I'm finished I'll post a few pictures of it to show you how it looks.

Edit: It's a 3 bay, 10*7 meter shed thats got 2 cars parked in it and the 3rd bay is for my work. Modifying a lot of the storage at the moment so I should end up with a really tidy shed... thats the plan anyway

I will need to post some pictures of my garage too, Currently it is empty with new isolated walls and fresh painted walls roof and floor. so my will look by far the cleanest.. hehe. put you will all comment that there are no tools in it at the moment. but i have them stashed in my basement. Maybe I can post a before and after picture of it empy and filled with tools.

Only downside is that it is to small. I have a 2004 VW passat TDI 4motion, volvo 240 Turbo and a 1995 toyota supra so 10m by 6.20m is far to small. but I think the volvo and passat will just stay in the rain :P

thats why i put my pics up and as soon as iv gutted my workshop out and cleaned it all up ready for customers il take more pics to show how hard me and my mate have been working lol

im even in the middle of getting another mechanic in the workshop and do a deal that he can use a bay for his project as long as he jumps in and helps on some jobs that i get in

favour for favour is great and glad i got people i can speak to and get help as it will enable me to open up to customers even quicker

Here are a phew photos that I have found on the computer of when I built my workshop three years ago.
Two of us managed to erect the steel in a weekend using a flatbed truck with jib and a set of ladders.
The sheeting on the roof was done using a cherry picker and three mates also managed that in a weekend, payment was a home made curry and a couple of slabs of beer.

Don't you guys need any winter isolation to be able to work in winter time. I've put 20cm of isolation in the walls and 30 in the roof of my garage, if not it would be unbareable in the wintertime. I guess you have a warmer Climate, But when the temprature outside my garage drop to -15 to -30 in the wintertime, Im glad I spent 3k£ on isolation and a good heater. :P Nice to work on your car in 30 below in a t-shirt.

These are insulated boards 90mm on the roof and 60mm on the walls the lowest we got last winter was minus 11 also put insulation down before I poured the concrete floor I need more than a t-shirt in winter though.

sam thats some workshop your building, is it for a business or is it just your private workshop

Both! it is in my garden I do fabrication work when I can i.e. four kids and my wife works away from home so I manage around three days per week.I also manufacture a ring roller and have lots of projects on the go an off road buggy, sidecar and also a Ducati and have started gathering parts for the kids buggy.

id be really interested in seeing the progress of the buggys, do you have a section on here anywhere with pics

im going to be building the ron champion buggy using his book and iv also now got plans for building a piranha 2 buggy which should be great fun

so where abouts in scotland are you ? my workshop is in near kirriemuir but i live in dundee so its quite a drive getting to and from my workshop

the only project im really consentrating on at the moment is my mitsubishi colt project that im doing a lot of strengthening on and then dropping in an early mitsubishi evo engine, further down the line im also going to be doing a big job with it which is the permenant 4x4 AWD swap

iv got pics and info in the projects section which i really need to update with new pics as iv now stripped it right back to the shell so i can start on any welding repair work and also the welding under the bonnet to strengthen it
