Paul I have a Shed load of 3ph extraction fans around 2' d... Any use???, Just another one of them things I aquired

Size doesn't matter (thank god for that, eh). If the thing is banging round too fast, you can re-pulley and belt to go a bit slower. 2' isn't huge, at all. I'll hunt out some info Paul.
Take a gander at this page. There's a fella mentions a 8' x 10' booth with a 24" fan...

Il take some pictures tommorow iv got about 10 or so, had a fealing there was some speed controlers as well...think there brook ones, the guy told me fan motors run a diffrent set of windings to a standard motor dont know why??, anyway's Il take a photo any use you can have a couple.....

Remeber, any fan used for a spray booth has to have the motor out of the airstream, ortherwise it will a} soon get clogged b} will go bang! when a spark from the motor ignites the paint vapours! a bifurcated way is best, axial fan is a none starter!

Except, Dave, how many motors on applications like this would not be TEFC? They'd stop cooling effectively, covered in paint... admittedly

This is what i was planning on doing - any thoughts anyone
i'm thinking of the same type of set up myself as i have a large vent in the same postion as in paul's picture
(Snowcat do you have any 1ph fans in your shed?)
i've seen some booths where the air is blown in rather than being sucked out
what are the pros and cons ?

Blowing air in pressurises the booth and contaminated air can leak out of cracks and miss the filter.
Sucking air out creates a depression, so all the contaminated air goes through the exit filter. Although dusty air may be drawn in through any cracks!

i'll have to have a look at both types
but i do like the pressure type and as you say i'll have to fit filters at both ends
with enough air movement i might be able to with a low power fan or even no fan

I did have but scraped them...Dohhh..
No not quite a hommer moment, The guy I got them off said all the S/F were burnt out.. After speeking to a sparks about them he said its common for the S/F ones to take out there start windings If there wired on an auto panel...as when the winds blowing on them they try and run in reverse..

They'll do, sort of. Not what a booth manufacturer would spec on a new installation. Also not bifurcated. Buy a spare, i'm sure Snowy will oblige...
The only thing with those fans is they are "axial", so won't be able to deal with much system pressure. They'll be great at moving free air, no filters involved (hole in wall, blow air out, etc), but won't much like pulling air through a filter cos of the pressure drop, so you'll need a fair amount of filter area. A lot of filter area. But then you won't have to change the filters so often as it'll take longer for them to clog up. Result!
Actually, i'd use fans like that as general workshop vent fans. They'll happily blow fume laden air out of the workshop all day. So get a couple anyway. You can work a cowl in over your main welding bench and keep your lungs clean, nae bother.

Ah but, you'll have to change them sooner, ie before they are fully clogged, if the fans can't pull air through them all that well
For my blast cabinet I use an extractor fan rated sufficiently to extract the air produced by the blast & breathing air. I have a re-circulating fan and filter to remove the bulk of the dust. This is a fairly coarse filter (an old t-shirt) which gets better as it clogs, until it eventually fails altogether! Cheap to replace £2.00 a bin-bag full from the local charity shop.

Iv got one above the bench to pull the fumes away and into the roof space..on a hot day I switch the phases round and have it blast cool air down, hmmm

Setting up a spray booth for spraying gates and railings.
I am going to form the booth from (Probably) glav sheet on a framework of angle or box section. Includes perspex windows on the back wall to let light in. I will include for intrinsically safe lighting and some sort of a fan to extract fumes. I was going to try to get hold of some sort of disposable lining for the walls - seen in it big spray shops - but don't know if it is worth the expense?
How do i need to set up the fan - presumably some sort of filter would be needed so it doesnt clog up over time. - Can it just be discharged outside? I will need a few hanging rails set up to support stuff. er.. anything else? Oh, mask with a breathing line to the outside world?
lol...just so happens i am a professionel painter and use 2 pack paint and very familiar with booths
