i'll have to open up the casing and have a look inside in order to work out the wiring

i do hope it's a single phase motor as it will fit the vent in my workshop

how can i check to see if it's a sealed motor ?

if it's not i'll only be able to use it to blow air into the booth

You should be able to get into the windings on it someware, Its a wood's motor the same as mine, very common chances are its ex poultry unit, If theres a set of windings marked Z1 and Z2 its S/F thease are the shunt (start windings) on S/F..... The wireing would be odd because most of thease were run on autostarts, when the tempreture rose they would cut in automaticaly so often they had permenat lives with controls wires upto them often wired into a series bank of multiple fans incoporating a fail safe alarm to page the unit manager of a serious faliure...

could you draw a little diagramme of the wiring so i could get an idea of what to look for when i open the casing ?

if it is phase motor i'll be able to wire it and try it out

also would it be safe to use in a space full of paint fumes ?

emmm, now there a question, It really depends how they have looped into the motor, but a single phase motor will be ran on L1 and L2 and Z1 and Z2 will be the start windings, now to add another complication they speed controled many of these motors, im not sure if some of the work was wired in the windings or if it was all on the speed controler... Can you take the cover off and get a picture of the windings??

The volume of air they shift is huge... The covers are mostly just 2 screws...

I think chances are looking at the Pdf's from the woods site that it is a S/F six pole 2 speed, sorry my mistake L1 and L2 are incorect S/F will be labeled as U1 and U2 if you find L1 L2 and L3 in there then its defo 3 phase, one set of wires was proberbly looped into a thermal cutout, thease are madantory for the warantys....the start windings are labeled as Z so theres no interchange....I think you should be in bussiness with this info.. If you wire live to U1 and N to U2 it should just run.

got the cover off (just 3 small screws)

and found this little wiring diagram inside

you were right it’s a 2 speed single phase motor

I wired it up and it works

it's a brushless motor so it should not make sparks

would it be safe to use it to extract the paint fumes from the booth ?

Yes it works well

it has 2 speeds and it does move the air around a bit

i'll test it to make sure that sure i don't set the shop alight

and if it's ok then i'll fit it into the wall vent and put up the booth walls

A bit of creative wiring with a DPCO relay in a box and you could control the fan speed remotely!

Good problem sorted, I love it when a plan comes together I see there is an interchange on the shunt windings, and the option for autostart, I see now the speed control just changes the resistance by runing in serries or parelel through the 2 windings clever hey, If you keep an eye out on Ebay for a DOL starter iv seen em go for a tenner then you will then have a thermal overload built into the system.
