2k is gloss ie 2k clear you need the activator or any colour in 2k you need the activator
but you can also get any colour in base coat which is 1k no activator needed then use
1k clear over the top no isocyanates at all

I seem to have got the complete wrong end of the stick with this mate, so I could use a polyester metalic silver base coat and cover it with my Upol 1k clear? The base coat doesen't use a hardener?

yes you've got it, check you have 100% got celly if it smells like pear drops you have base, I havnt seen metallic celly for at least 25 years

here you tell them either what colour you want , provide make model and paint code or RAL and they mix it to order for you

All I have at the moment is the link above I would have to go down the workshop and read the tin. I am also spraying over the old paint, suitably prepared, with epoxy primer so I guess I can then spray anything with no fear of interactions?

just been on the site, celly metallic silver I didn't think anyone did it any more, yes you can stick anything on top, with base coat the metallic finish will be much more even

Ahhhh thanks snoop, and for clearing that up mate, although I have now done half the car with what I have and have enough to finish it, I spent hours searching for information and watching tube vids and it was never made clear, I just got the impression that now you can't use cell on new cars it was 2k or nothing. I presume the 1k base is easier to spray than the cell then?
I am doing ok on things like the wings and doors it looks lovely with a good deep shine and hardly any orange peel, but I am having a hell of a time with the large areas like the roof, I either get loads of overspray settling on it or stripes or patchy

yeah that's the down side of celly metallic gloss its hard to get even and if you start flatting it you also flat the metallic content of the paint the 1k base is really easy to apply as your not going for a shine all you do is mist it on, when happy apply a drop coat which evens the look out, let it flash off and on with your clear

I think this has been the problem with all the advice I have been getting, everyone has been talking about Basecoat and I'm spraying celly. I presume that I don't do a dropcoat on celly gloss then either?

no, no drop coat on gloss as it just ends up as overspray and leaves a rough surface

Ohhh great that explains a bit then, so best technique for the celly is try to have the panel vertical to avoid overspray falling on it and spray in the normal left right, left righ manner, but light wet coats flashing off in between, should I leave the final coat longer before the clear? or just the same time as flashing the celly?

What I am finding is that the panels I have finished are staying soft for a very long time, I masked a door today that was sprayed two weeks ago and the tape marked the clear

there is no real need to have the panel vertical, I don't think that the tape should have marked the clear after 2 weeks, if the clear isn't celly I think I would let the celly dry first give it a very light flat to remove overspray then on with the clear, if the paint types are different one could be keeping the other soft and have different drying rates

No wonder nothing was making sense to you. I was assuming you were painting in C.O.B and all I managed to do was confuse you completely. I, like Snooper was not aware you could still get celly met. Sprayed it a couple of times in the 70s and it made a propper mess.

Hi Norsa, yeah all my spraying experience was back in the eighties and was all celly and suction guns.
Snoop, but I thought you were not supposed to sand the metalic??

celly met isn't the easiest thing to apply evenly either unlike C.O.B if you get a fault its easily put right

your not when its base coat but you should just about get away with it try a test piece, the celly was never designed to be over coated with clear so you are supposed to apply it as a top coat, and the fact you are using 2 different products only complicates the process even more as your clear is still soft 2 weeks later

Well thanks to you clearing the missunderstanding I had of the modern products I will certainly be using COB on the next job. I suppose if I buy a tin of silver metalic base and do the bonnet with it the chances of a colour match is zero?
