your not when its base coat but you should just about get away with it try a test piece, the celly was never designed to be over coated with clear so you are supposed to apply it as a top coat, and the fact you are using 2 different products only complicates the process even more as your clear is still soft 2 weeks later

I think you are right there mate it must be the thinners leetching out the celly keeping the clear soft, I guess it will eventually go hard. I hope

What grade would you give the final celly coat a light rub with 800? wet

yeah I wouldn't bet on a match in fact I would put my money firmly on a miss match,
if you have some scrap steel give it a coat of celly let it dry give a very light flat to remove overspray and try some clear, it may be ok if not then you wont have trashed the car

No wonder nothing was making sense to you. I was assuming you were painting in C.O.B and all I managed to do was confuse you completely. I, like Snooper was not aware you could still get celly met. Sprayed it a couple of times in the 70s and it made a propper mess.

I only used it a couple of times as well, not good stuff, in theory its like synthetic, however it lands on the panel is what you have to live with as it doesn't polish well due to metallic content being at the surface.
ive also sprayed the metallic synthetic as well once and once was enough

its all good fun , unless things go wrong you may have better luck now just make sure you go for a shine when applying the celly getting the finish as smooth as possible

Well I sort of already knew the COB was a lot easier but I thought it was all 2k and dangerous, So I stuck with what I knew, but I hadn't sprayed metalic before.
All I need now is a way to stop the blasted bugs landing in it
I will put up a few pics of what I have done so far if you like? I will take a few tomorrow, I'm just taking it steady a panel at a time as there is no hurry for this car to come out of the workshop.

pics are good bugs are attracted to the smell I think unless its a bright colour

Incidently the only reason I was spraying the clear over the celly is because I bought this car new in 1984 and I knew it already had clear over the metalic, and it must be celly back then? Surely Jawel wouldn't supply this 1k clear with the celly as a kit if it wasn't suitable to use with it?

I doubt very much it was celly in 84 what car and year is it ?

just had a look for some dates and it was around 1972 the 2k started to take over from alkyd resin paints

Like snooper said, most likely it was COB but it was still known as a clear coat over cellulose as the base was an air dried 1:1 mix the same as cellulose DG and modern polyester (commonly refered to as 2k base). This is where a lot of the confusion lies.

I think ordering over the net does have its disadvantages, if you walk into body shop supplier and give them the paint code and year of the vehicle they will be able to tell you what paint system was originally used
