Steel Boat restoration

Od not been down for 3 weeks and I'm really happy that she is bone dry inside still. Finished painting the insides of the Hull on Saturday and put all the soundproofing around the engines back in.

Then cracked on with some more repairs to the wood. Removed all the water damaged teak ply. It's bonded on so was a bit of an **** to get off the half decent stuff. Next weekend I will treat this and paint with epoxy before the new section goes on.

Then finished up the wood work in the back cabin. Just needs sanding and refinishing. The ceiling I'm painting creme.

The missus has been busy making new curtains.

And I took down some of the retrimmed seats. Note the before pic of the rotten wood work

Thanks, I hope it will but i still have months of work to do to get her ready to sell. Now the weather is a bit warmer I can get some exterior painting sorted.

Might be worth just selling "as is" and save yourself a lot of work and money if it doesn't hold any sentimental value and will simply be sold anyway when finished.

Yes, as W.olly says, overplating will be viewed as a bodge, and a potential buyer's surveyor will comment adversely on it. Probly saying it 'needs repairing properly' or some such.
If you are able to cut out the thin bits and insert new steel, it will definitely improve the resale value.
It gets awkward when the whole bottom is generally of good original thickness, but with millions of little pits, dispersed across the plating, each pit reducing the thickness to 1 or 2 mm.

Yes indeed, and with thick old 1970's GRP, using old fashioned resins, it merely resulted in the hull harmlessly soaking up a few kilos of water.
But specialist repairers milked it, and even today buyers and surveyors of modern yachts are over-obsessed with moisture content meters etc.
Despite osmosis no longer being a problem as you say...

In this day an age,with the price of diesel the cloth engine isnt such a bad option.

Yes filling her up will be a painful event as she has a 500l tank. Fortunately the gauge says she still has half a tank.

The engines use about 2l per hour each and cruising can be done on 1 engine. So £3 or so running cost per hour.

You have more faith in it than I, I gave up on boats about thirty years ago, as has been mentioned, they are a serious money pit. Even when they are 100% they are still a money pit, needing constant attention AND you need the latest this, that or the other.

Boats are like some women, you can love them to bits, throw as much money as you can at them and they still kick you in the nuts
